The member (201) having a first edge (202) having a plurality of teeth (204). The plurality of teeth (204) having a non-uniform tooth pattern (205) which comprises a first tooth pattern along a first section (209) of the edge and a second tooth pattern (207) along a second section (210) of the edge so that a sheet-tearing force can be applied to a sheet on either the first end or the second end of the member (201).

Abstract: This invention provides an apparatus for attaching a cutting strip to a carton blank. The apparatus includes a first member for conveying carton blanks past a second member, and the second member is arranged to cut a cuffing strip from a supply of cuffing strip material and deposit the cutting strip upon a carton blank. The first member may be a conveyor belt fitted with a suction member, and the second member may be upper and lower dies that are movable relative to one another and a member that can feed a supply of cutting strip material between the dies. Initial downward movement of the upper die cuts a cutting strip from the supply of cutting strip material and the cutting strip is retained on the upper die. Further downward movement of the upper die brings the cutting strip into contact with a carton blank. The apparatus may also include an alignment member to ensure that the carton blanks are properly positioned relative to the second member when the cutting strips are attached.

Abstract: There is provided apparatus (10) for attaching a serrated cutting strip to a carton blank comprising a first means for (24) conveying carton blanks past a second means (16), the second means (16) being arranged to cut a cutting strip from a supply (38) of cutting strip material and deposit said cutting strip upon a carton blank. The first means comprises a conveyor belt (24) preferably fitted with suction means, and the second means (16) comprises upper (58) and lower dies movable relative to one another and means (14) to feed a supply of cutting strip material between said dies. In use initial downward movement of the upper die (58) cuts a cutting strip from the supply of cutting strip material, said cutting strip being retained upon the upper die (58) by suction. Further downward movement of the upper die (58) brings the cutting strip into contact with a carton blank.

Further downward movement of the upper die brings the cutting strip into contact with a carton blank. The apparatus includes an alignment member to ensure the carton blanks are correctly positioned relative to the cutting and applicator mechanism when the cutting strips are attached.

Abstract: A serrated cutting strip (26) for a carton comprises paper or board impregnated with a mix of acrylic resin and urea formaldehyde. The strip is 0.2 to 0.5 mm in thickness and can bend without cracking over a bar of 20 mm diameter. The strip has adhesive on one side and a release sheet (28) on the adhesive. The strip is applied to a carton by apparatus (10) which comprises rollers (44,45) for advancing a substrate sheet (24), a cutter (12) and means (44,45) for drawing a release sheet (28) away from the edge (46).
