The control program that is stored in the memory and contains user prompting information and menus is converted into displays, each having two disparately organized navigation areas and a data area. The first navigation area facilitates an overview of the entire task. The second navigation area displays individual work steps in the sequence in which they are to be processed. A tool provided by the invention is preferably used for the purposes of configuring, designing or programming an installation, for example an installation in the field of drive engineering.
