    Abstract: A surgical hub is configured to transmit generator data associated with a surgical procedure from a generator of the surgical hub to a cloud-based system. The surgical hub comprises a processor and a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to: receive generator data; encrypt the generator data; generate a message authentication code based on the generator data; generate a datagram comprising: the encrypted generator data, the generated message authentication code, a source identifier and a destination identifier; and transmit the datagram to the cloud-based system. The datagram allows for the cloud-based system to: decrypt the encrypted generator data; verify the integrity of the generator data based on the message authentication code; authenticate the surgical hub as the source of the datagram; and validate a transmission path followed by the datagram between the surgical hub and the cloud based system.

    Abstract: A control circuit for use with an electrosurgical system is disclosed. The control circuit is programmed to provide an electrosurgical signal comprising a plurality of pulses to first and second electrodes and receive a first reading of an impedance between the first and second electrodes. The control circuit is programmed to receive a second reading of the impedance between the first and second electrodes. The control circuit is programmed to determine a difference between the first and second readings and determine that a short circuit is present between the first and second electrodes based on a magnitude of the difference between the first reading and the second reading. The control circuit is programmed to generate a signal indicating the short circuit between the first and second electrodes.

    Abstract: In one general aspect, various embodiments are directed to a surgical instrument that can supply mechanical energy and electrical energy to an end effector of the surgical instrument. The surgical instrument may be operated in a first operating mode in which a transducer of the surgical instrument produces mechanical energy, or vibrations, that are transmitted to the end effector and a second operating mode in which electrical energy, or current, can flow through the end effector to perform electrosurgery. In another general aspect, the surgical instrument may comprise a clamp, or jaw, which can be moved into a closed position to hold tissue against a waveguide, or blade, of the end effector. In the second operating mode of the surgical instrument, current can flow from a power source, through the waveguide, and return to the power source through a path comprising the jaw.

    Abstract: An electrosurgical system for providing an electrosurgical signal to a patient is disclosed. The electrosurgical system includes a control circuit, wherein the control circuit is programmed to: provide the electrosurgical signal to a first electrode and a second electrode, receive a plurality of input variables, wherein the plurality of input variables are indicative of a short being either present or absent between the first electrode and the second electrode, and apply a short detection algorithm to the plurality of input variables to indicate either a short circuit or no short circuit between the first electrode and the second electrode during the provision of the electrosurgical signal. The plurality of input variables may include at least one impedance level between the first electrode and the second electrodes during the provision of the electrosurgical signal. The short detection algorithm applied may include a fuzzy logic algorithm, a neural network algorithm, or neuro-fuzzy algorithm.

The energy delivered to the end effector switches between RF energy and ultrasonic energy based on a determination of various factors such as tissue impedance.

The method includes storing phase points of first and second digital electrical signal waveforms in first and second lookup tables. The first and second digital electrical signal waveforms are represented by a predetermined number of phase points that define wave shapes. At each clock cycle, a digital synthesis circuit retrieves phase points from the first and second lookup tables and the digital processing circuit combines phase points from the first and second lookup tables. A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) circuit converts the combined phase point into an analog signal. The analog signal is configured to drive a first and second ultrasonic transducer.
