  • Patent number: 8798627
Abstract: A system and method are provided for supporting a multi-mode portable user terminal (UT) hard handoff procedure for a call from a wireless local area network (WLAN) to a cellular telephone network. The method includes: establishing a link between a UT and a serving WLAN; establishing a call via the established WLAN link; monitoring the WLAN link signal strength; simultaneously monitoring a serving cellular network; initiating a hard handoff to the cellular network, responsive to the monitored WLAN link signal strength falling below a minimum threshold; and, continuing the call via the cellular network. More specifically, the method initiates a call handoff to a Cellular Gateway (CGW) telephone number, responsive to the monitored WLAN link signal strength falling below the minimum threshold. Then, continuing the call via the cellular network includes continuing the call to the first telephone number via the CGW handoff telephone number.

  • Patent number: 8467794
Abstract: A telecommunications system is described that includes a first interface configured to receive a first call message according to a CDMA air interface format. This system also includes a message translator configured to determine if the first call message includes an indicator associated with an international telephone call and, if so, is further configured to generate a second call message that includes an international prefix. Also included is a second interface configured to transmit the second call message having a particular core network format.

  • Publication number: 20110170005
Abstract: A mobile media device may preemptively switch from a terrestrial video signal of a simulcast to a mobile video signal of the same simulcast upon detecting displacement motion. In one example, an apparatus includes a display configured to display video data, and a signal selection unit configured to determine whether the apparatus is moving, wherein the signal selection unit is configured to cause the display to display video data from a terrestrial signal of a simulcast broadcast when the apparatus does not detect displacement motion, and wherein the signal selection unit is configured to cause the display to display video data from a mobile signal of the simulcast broadcast when the signal selection unit detects displacement motion. In this manner, the apparatus may avoid loss of data from the terrestrial video signal that may be caused while moving.

  • Publication number: 20070049274
Abstract: A system and a method are provided for supporting a hard handoff procedure for a call from a wireless local area network (WLAN) to a cellular telephone network. The method includes: establishing a link between a user terminal (UT) and a serving WLAN, and a call via the WLAN link; simultaneously monitoring a serving cellular telephone network; forwarding information identifying the UT within the cellular network, to the serving WLAN; in response to losing the link with the serving WLAN, performing a hard handoff to the cellular network; and, continuing the call via the cellular network. Generally, the hard handoff can be performed if the WLAN is able to communicate the UT's identity to the cellular telephone, as the UT's position can be determined by the cellular network. The hard handoff is performed with the UT receiving resource allocations in a common control channel message, such as a Short Message Ser vice (SMS) or paging message.
