  • Publication number: 20120263151
Abstract: A wireless digital communication system includes a base station in communication with a plurality of user equipment mobile terminals (UEs). The system prioritizes the forwarding of blocks of downlink data to designated ones of the UEs. The system employs adaptive modulation and coding (AM&C) to achieve improved radio resource utilization and provides optimum data rates for user services. Blocks of downlink (DL) data are received by the base station which requests downlink (DL) channel quality measurements only from those mobile terminals (UEs) with pending downlink transmissions. The UEs respond to the request by measuring and reporting DL channel quality to the base station, which then allocates resources such that the UEs will make best use of radio resources. The base station notifies the UEs of the physical channel allocation indicating the modulation/coding rate and allocated slots followed by transmission of blocks of downlink data which are transmitted to the UEs.

  • Publication number: 20120207051
Abstract: A method for reporting channel quality from a user equipment (UE) to a base station is described. The UE derives a channel quality for each of a plurality of downlink resources. The UE transmits channel quality reports in a pattern of time intervals by rotating through the plurality of downlink resources in different time intervals of the pattern, wherein a channel quality report is not transmitted by the UE in each time interval of a frame.

  • Publication number: 20120195263
Abstract: A method and apparatus may be used for peer-to-peer communications. A first non-access point (non-AP) station (STA) may receive a message for establishing a direct communication link from a second non-AP STA. The message may include a service priority. The first non-AP STA may transmit another message in response to receiving the message from the second non-AP STA, and communicate directly with the second non-AP STA. The system may be an Ad hoc network comprising a plurality of STAs without an access point (AP) where each STA maintains a database of one-hop and two-hop STAs, and establishes a direct link to other STAs after informing neighboring STAs of an intention to establish a direct communication link.

  • Patent number: 8199726
Abstract: In a wireless digital communication system which may employ CDMA technology, a method and system for obtaining channel quality (CQ) measurements for downlink resource allocation wherein a User Equipment (UE) continuously measures received signal code power (RSCP) based on a communication on a reference channel provided by the network. The UE measures timeslot interference signal code power (ISCP) either continuously, by configuration or by rotation and reports downlink CQ. The UE may report the RSCP once and the ISCP per timeslot, or may report some function of the RSCP/ISCP ratio such as modulation parameters or combined coding of all timeslots.

  • Publication number: 20120127968
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) includes circuitry configured to receive control information on a downlink control channel from a base station. The control information indicates an allocation of an uplink channel and the control information is sent in response to the base station determining that the UE is to send an adaptive modulation and coding report. The circuitry is further configured in response to the control information to transmit a communication in the allocated uplink channel in a time interval including at least one time slot. The communication includes an adaptive modulation and coding report, and a transmission power level of the communication is derived from the control information and a pathloss measured by the UE.

  • Patent number: 8159999
Abstract: A peer-to-peer communication system using a direct link setup (DLS) is disclosed. A mobile station (STA) establishes a direct communication link with another STA by sending a message requesting a DLS to an access point (AP), (i.e., a centralized controller). The AP may accept or reject the DLS request based on channel measurements. If the DLS request is accepted, the DLS is established such that the STAs may directly communicate with each other. An established DLS connection may be torn down by the AP sending a message including a DLS teardown request to one of the STAs, or based on channel measurements. The system may be an Ad hoc network comprising a plurality of STAs without an AP where each STA maintains a database of one-hop and two-hop STAs, and establishes a direct link to other STAs after informing neighboring STAs of an intention to establish a direct communication link.

  • Publication number: 20120076031
Abstract: The invention includes several embodiments for slot assignment in code division multiple access communication systems. One embodiment for fixed beams assigns slots by first detecting a beam having the best received quality and selected the best slot from that beam. Another fixed beam embodiment determines the best slot or slots in a number of beams and determines the overall best beam/slot combination. Another fixed beam embodiment uses a modified interference factor. One embodiment for the uplink using adaptive arrays using a spatial analysis stage followed by a transmission power level estimation stage. An overall interference level associated with each slot is determined and a slot having the best overall quality is determined. Another embodiment for the downlink uses the spatial analysis and slot assignment of the uplink for the downlink. Another embodiment for the downlink uses a spatial and transmission power level estimation stages.

  • Publication number: 20120039209
Abstract: A method for downlink power control for use in a spread spectrum time division communication system having time slots for communication, implemented in a user equipment, includes receiving data in a command per coded composite transport channel (CCTrCH) transmitted over a plurality of time slots. An interference power for each time slot of the plurality of time slots is measured and a single power command for the entire CCTrCH is transmitted in response to a signal to interference ratio of the received CCTrCH and the measured interference power measurement for each time slot. A subsequent data is received in the CCTrCH communication having a transmission power level for each downlink communication time slot set individually in response to the interference power measurement for that time slot and the single power command for the entire CCTrCH.

  • Patent number: 8045520
Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for controlling downlink transmission power levels in a spread spectrum time division communication system having frames with time slots for communication, which receives at a user equipment (UE) a downlink communication from a base station and determines an error rate of the received communication. The UE then produces power level adjustments for each of the time slots based in part on the error rate and transmits an uplink communication to the base station which includes the power level. In response to the power level adjustments and (or) other information, transmission power level is set for each time slot in the downlink communication.

  • Patent number: 7835700
Abstract: Multiple antenna elements of a WTRU are used to form an adaptive antenna beam pattern for receiving signals in the downlink direction. The WTRU utilizes the formed antenna beam to form a transmission antenna beam for transmitting signals in the uplink direction. In an alternate embodiment, the multiple antenna elements are used to form a plurality of fixed, predetermined antenna beams. The WTRU then selects and switches to the one of the predetermined beams that yields the best downlink reception signals. The WTRU utilizes the selected beam pattern to transmit signals in the uplink direction. In an alternate embodiment, the WTRU receives spectral arrangement information and utilizing this information to avoid transmitting in the direction of spectrally adjacent WRTUs.

  • Publication number: 20100157948
Abstract: A method of using a mobile unit in a multi-cell communication system to determine whether to commence handover of the mobile unit from a serving base station located in a first cell of the communication system to a target base station located in a second cell of the communication system. The mobile unit determines the serving base station received signal code power (RSCPser), the first cell interference signal code power (ISCPser), the target base station received signal code power (RSCPtar) and the second cell interference signal code power (ISCPtar). If the ratio RSCPser/ISCPser is less than the ratio RSCPtar/ISCPtar, the mobile unit commences handover to the target base station. The multi-cell communication system may be a time division duplex (TDD) system. The mobile unit may send a message to a radio network controller (RNC) in communication with the serving and target base stations to initiate the handover.
