  • Patent number: 9578695
Abstract: Method and device for solid structure formation by localized microwaves for additive fabrication of solid bodies by use of localized microwave radiation applied to a source material, in the form of a powder, wire or other solid form, so as to generate a hotspot in a thermal-runaway process or through plasma breakdown, and melt a small portion of it (with at least one dimension smaller than the microwave wavelength) thereby consolidating small pieces of the molten source material in a stepwise manner to construct the entire body.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 24, 2013
Date of Patent: February 21, 2017

  • Publication number: 20140013982
Abstract: A method and corresponding devices employ a mixture of at least a metal oxide and a metal which undergoes an exothermic chemical reaction. Microwave radiation is applied to the mixture so as to generate a localized hot spot in the mixture, thereby initiating the exothermic chemical reaction. The use of localized microwave radiation facilitates low power and portable implementations. Devices and techniques for cutting, drilling, welding, material synthesis, generating thrust, and mechanical power and motion are also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20020122445
Abstract: A laser with microwave excitation includes a source of microwave radiation coupled to a microwave resonator. The resonator is configured such that the microwave radiation generates an oscillating electric-field perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the resonator corresponding to the first longitudinal resonator mode standing wave pattern. An excitation cavity, housing at least one gas discharge conduit, is coupled to the microwave resonator along a major portion of the cavity's length. The excitation cavity is configured to be below cutoff.

  • Patent number: 6114676
Abstract: A microwave device and corresponding method for cutting, and especially drilling into, a solid body of non-conductive material employ a microwave source which provides microwave radiation, typically through a waveguide, to a concentrator. The concentrator is configured to concentrate the microwave radiation onto a small region of solid body, thereby generating sufficient heat in that region to liquefy a volume of the material to form a hole. The device and method may be used to perform various drilling, cutting, nailing, joining and welding operations on a wide range of dielectric materials including ceramics, concrete and stone.

  • Patent number: 5998773
Abstract: A microwave heater (22) which uses electromagnetic radiation for heating liquid flowing from a liquid source to a liquid receiver. The microwave heater (22) includes a microwave generator having an interaction region (28) within which the electromagnetic radiation is generated. At least a portion of a conduit (30) which has an inlet (32) connected to the liquid source and an outlet (34) connected to the liquid receiver is deployed within the interaction region (28). The liquid flows through the conduit (30) acting as a dielectric load of the microwave generator so as to be heated by the electromagnetic radiation.
