  • Patent number: 6213917
Abstract: A training apparatus for improving the performance of a swimmer. In a first aspect of the invention, a propeller rotates about an axis which is aligned with the path of the swimmer. A permanent magnet driven by the propeller attached to the swimmer produces a rotating magnetic field which acts on a magnetic field transducer to produce a pulsating signal whose frequency varies directly with the swimmer's speed. The sensor's output is multiplied, amplified and fed to an earphone worn by the swimmer. Changes in frequency immediately inform the swimmer of whether his performance has improved or deteriorated. In a second aspect of the invention, permanent magnets are mounted on vanes of an impeller which rotate about a horizontal axis which is at right angles to the path of the swimmer. Rotating magnetic fields of the permanent magnets act on a magnetic field sensor to produce a pulsating signal whose frequency varies with the swimmer's speed.

  • Patent number: 6033228
Abstract: A training method with a visual display for a swimmer. A compact apparatus is mounted on a mid-portion of a swimmer for generating a fluctuating signal which varies in frequency according to the speed of the swimmer. The swimmer changes his form and/or movement to vary the frequency of the signal. The signal is processed to produce a fluctuating visual signal which is communicated by a visual display to the swimmer to immediately inform him whether the change in form or movement has increased or decreased his speed.

  • Patent number: 5823308
Abstract: A control for a heavy vehicle clutch wherein control members are moved rearwardly away from an engine to disengage a clutch from an engine and engage a clutch brake disc. A pair of co-acting multiple actuators are independently mounted at fixed locations on sides of a bell housing which encloses the clutch. The actuators are spaced apart from a longitudinal axis of the clutch and produce a resultant force which is substantially collinear with the longitudinal axis of the clutch. The actuators have outward extendable push rods which move rearwardly when a foot pedal is depressed to disengage a clutch and move forwardly when the pedal is disengaged to engage the clutch. The push rods engage a movable member which is centered on the axis of the clutch having an outer side portion for restraining the clutch brake disc from rotating when the clutch is disengaged.

  • Patent number: 5697792
Abstract: A training apparatus with a visual display for a swimmer. In a first aspect of the invention, an impeller mounted in a module worn by a swimmer is driven by a forward motion of the swimmer. A pair of permanent magnets mounted on opposite vanes of the impeller act on a magnetic field type transducer to produce a pulsating voltage which varies directly in frequency with the speed of the swimmer. The output of the sensor is processed and transmitted to a visual display worn by the swimmer. Changes in the visual display enable the swimmer to identify the effect of changes in the swimmer's form and/or movement on his performance. In a second aspect of the invention, a revolving magnet produces a pulsating voltage in a coil of wire. The output of the coil is processed and transmitted to a visual display worn by the swimmer.

  • Patent number: 4991702
Abstract: A motor vehicle clutch control for vehicles which are equipped with manual transmissions. The control has multiple hydraulic actuators which are mounted on a conventional stationary bell shaped housing which encloses a clutch. The actuators are positioned apart from the axis of the clutch and act directly on a member which is centered on the rotational axis of the clutch. The bell shaped housing has apertures which cooperate with the "off axis" mounting of the actuators to allow the inspection and the servicing of the actuators without the removal of the bell housing or other adjacent parts from a vehicle. In a first embodiment of the invention, the actuators are mounted on a detachable bracket in the interior of the housing and are accessible for installation and removal through an aperture in the side of the housing. In the second embodiment of the invention the actuators are mounted on the rear of the housing and have output members which extend through apertures in the rear of the housing.

  • Patent number: 4894913
Abstract: A heavy-duty industrial tool has a working jaw mechanism operated by a pair of handles that are squeezed together. The upper handle has a main non-metallic handle member to whose sides are fastened a pair of stamped metal side members. These side members are in-laid into recesses in the sides of the non-metallic member to form a gripping portion. Forwardly of the gripping portion, the widths of the metallic members increase to form a throat within which the lower handle is pivotally mounted. The lower handle contains a stack of laminations, including a cutting blade that is forward of the pivot to form the upper jaw of the tool. The lower jaw is an anvil member that joins to flanges of the metal side members of the upper handle. When the tool is used to cut tensioned strapping, a resilient metal bracket attached to the blade presses the strapping against the anvil on opposite sides of the blade and deforms to absorb energy that is released by the strapping upon severing.

  • Patent number: 4534458
Abstract: A self-aligning clutch release bearing assembly is described which is particularly well suited for use in a rotatable friction clutch of the type where the clutch release levers constantly engage the rotatable race member of the bearing. The bearing is formed to provide a predetermined radial clearance between the bearing and the bearing carrier for permitting the bearing to shift radially with respect to the bearing carrier, so that the bearing may coaxially align itself with the clutch input shaft axis under a force imparted to the bearing by the rotating clutch release levers.

  • Patent number: 4482041
Abstract: A clutch release bearing assembly is described in which a lubrication reservoir is provided between the bearing and the bearing carrier. The lubricant in this reservoir is communicable through a plurality of passageways in the bearing carrier to lubricate the reciprocable movement of the bearing carrier with respect to a guide member connected with the transmission. The bearing assembly is formed to provide a predetermined radial clearance between the bearing and bearing carrier which permits the bearing to shift radially with respect to the bearing carrier, so that the bearing may coaxially align itself with a clutch input shaft axis, said shifting being operative to transfer lubricant from the reservoir to the area between the bearing carrier and guide member.

  • Patent number: 4355992
Abstract: A rotatable machine assembly comprising a sprocket with a casing defined by a pair of plates secured together and supported on a hub through a ball bearing assembly. The ball bearings are supported between an outer race member and a raceway in the hub. The plates of the casing surround and are supported by the outer race member so as to define annular axially spaced side walls on each side of the ball bearing assembly. A seal is supported by the hub on each side of the ball bearing with each seal being disposed entirely axially inwardly of the exterior surface of the respective side walls and in sealing engagement with the interior surface of each of the side walls thereby sealing the ball bearing while being protected by the side walls.

  • Patent number: 4276974
Abstract: A self-aligning clutch release bearing assembly including a tubular bearing carrier and a anti-friction bearing assembly encircling the bearing carrier and supported thereon by means of an annular spring washer which enables relative restricted shifting movement of the axis of the bearing relative to the axis of the bearing carrier to compensate for eccentricity in the axis of rotation of a clutch assembly and a guide member on which the clutch release bearing assembly is mounted. In addition, the spring washer permits restricted angular displacement of the axis of the bearing assembly relative to the axis of the bearing carrier to compensate for angular misalignment between the clutch assembly and axis of reciprocation of the clutch release bearing assembly.
