    Abstract: This invention relates to a new nitration system, and a new method for nitration of aromatic compounds. The nitration system comprises dinitrogen pentaoxide dissolved in an organic solvent, and after having generated an intermediate therein, this reaction mixture is poured into a water solution of a selected nucleophile. The nucleophile preferably comprises a hydrogen sulphite ion, sulphite ion or sulphur dioxide.
