  • Patent number: 5594847
Abstract: A method for selecting objects from a ruler provides a simple process for selecting a plurality of free form objects that lie approximately in a line. Free form objects, which are not required to be aligned in rows and columns, are positioned in a window generated by an application program. The window also includes vertical and horizontal rulers along its left and top edges, respectively. To select objects that lie along a single horizontal line, the user moves the cursor over the vertical ruler. This causes the cursor becomes a fight-pointing arrow. When the use presses the mouse button, a horizontal line is extended across the screen. When the mouse button is released, all of the objects that intersect the line are redrawn to indicate that they have been selected. Adjacent "rows" of objects may be selected by dragging the mouse along the ruler while the mouse button is pressed. Non-adjacent rows of objects may be selected by holding down the SHIFT key on the keyboard while pressing the mouse button.
