  • Publication number: 20100129550
Abstract: Pigments for inkjet inks are controllably functionalised to improve water-dispersibility, ozone resistance, etc., by irradiation of the pigment particle with high energy radiation, such as gamma radiation in air or by plasma activation, to form a stable functionalisable intermediate pigment particle, then activating the stable functionalisable intermediate, e.g. by heating, in the presence of a functionalising precursor (e.g. a polymer or polymerisable monomer) to form a modified pigment particle having one or more functionalising group grafted onto the pigment particle.

    Publication date: May 27, 2010
Inventors: John D. Goddard, Alan R. Pitt, Elizabeth A. Simister, Mark Bradley, Anais F. Ronot
  • Publication number: 20090231670
Abstract: A device comprises one or more dielectric layers, one side of the layer or layers being conductive. A hydrophobic layer is provided on the other side of the dielectric layer. First and second fluids are located on the surface of the hydrophobic layer, the fluids being immiscible with each other. The first fluid comprises at least one ionic liquid. The conductive layer and first fluid are arranged such that they can be electrically connected.

    Publication date: September 17, 2009
Inventors: Christopher L. Bower, Christopher B. Rider, John R. Fyson, Elizabeth A. Simister, Andrew Clarke
  • Publication number: 20090200520
Abstract: A composite comprises conductive particles within a binder matrix, the particles being colloidably unstable within a solution and forming a conductive open network within the binder matrix when dried.
    Type: Application
    Filed: October 9, 2006
    Publication date: August 13, 2009
Inventors: Christopher L. Bower, Elizabeth A. Simister, Nicholas A. Pightling, Stanley W. Stephenson, III
  • Publication number: 20080316564
Abstract: A flexible display comprises a flexible dielectric layer (2) having a conductive layer (3) on one side and a hydrophobic layer (1) on the other side. Two fluids (4, 5) are located on the hydrophobic surface, the fluids being immiscible with one another. One fluid is a liquid conductor (5). When a potential is applied between the conductive layer and the liquid conductor the interface between the two fluids changes.

  • Publication number: 20070178280
Abstract: A method of coating well defined discrete areas of a flexible substrate by creating a lyophobic pattern on the surface of the web to leave a desired pattern of lyophilic areas. A layer of coating solution is laid down over the patterned web, the solution withdrawing from the lyophobic areas and collecting on the lyophilic areas.

    Publication date: August 2, 2007
Inventors: Christopher Bower, Elizabeth Simister, Terence Blake, Eleanor Bonnist
  • Patent number: 6472139
Abstract: A hydrophobically capped oligomeric acrylamide or pyrrolidone is employed as a coating aid in coating compositions, especially such compositions useful in the manufacture of photographic products. Preferred coating aids are surfactants having the general formula in which R, R1 and R2 are each independently selected from aliphatic hydrocarbyl, aryl-(aliphatic hydrocarbyl) and (aliphatic hydrocarbyl)-aryl groups, which groups may be unsubstituted, partially fluorinated or fully fluorinated, L is a sulphur atom or a linking group that contains a sulphur atom attached to the T group and T is a hydrophilic oligomeric group obtainable by the oligomerisation of one or more vinyl monomers having an amido function.
