    Abstract: A method for the automatic provisioning of a network element (NE) includes receiving a client signal at a tunable optical translator (OT) in the NE, determining the set of channels supported by the OT that are able to correspond to the client signal, eliminating the channels that have connections, that may be present on a line side of the NE in a laser off scan process, or that have not been equipped or otherwise provisioned for transmission, tuning the OT to each of the remaining channels and determining the optical power level of each channel on a line side of the NE in a laser on scan process. Subsequently, the channel with the highest power level is selected to transmit the client signal and associations for a point to point connection for that channel are added for that OT to a database of associations for the NE.

    Abstract: Whether or not the provisioning of a given BRI is properly administered is determined by providing a collection of processes which exercise the known network provided supplementary services in a predetermined fashion. Specifically, a predetermined, i.e., algorithmic, process is employed to examine an administration database to determine which DSLs are to support supplementary services and, then, the process invokes a plurality of processes which attempt to activate the expected supplementary service. The basic mode of operation is to generate a connectivity context in which the supplementary service can be invoked and, then, cause the service to be invoked. ISDN messages are transmitted to the network over the D channel of the given BRI both to establish the service context and, then, to invoke the supplemental service.

    Abstract: Provisioning a Central Office (CO) Basic Rate Interface (BRI) access is a complex procedure which involves hundreds, and potentially thousands, of parameters that must be asserted to configure the CO for a particular users service profile. In such a complex procedure, errors in the provisioning may be introduced which are difficult and costly to detect and correct. To solve this problem, a provisioning tool which exercises BRI lines i.e., digital subscriber lines (DSLs) from a CO to a premises switch is defined which validates that transport related restrictions and permissions are properly administered at the CO. This is achieved by the system calling itself over such lines, and varying the types (e.g., voice, digital, data, 3.1 kHz audio, et al.) of call attempts that are placed to ensure that all lines support the intended services.
