  • Patent number: 5058655
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a thick-walled container casting of a cast iron with a spheroidal graphite comprises forming an inflexible mold spaced between an inner cylindrical dead mold core and an outer mold arranged over the dead mold core, filling the mold space through a gate from an end thereof while cooling particularly the inner mold surface of the mold ajacent the dead mold over the amount of a cooling of a usual sand casting, and dimensioning the gate so that the cast iron solidifies in the gate before the eutectic solidification of the casting sets in. The device comprises an inner cylindrical dead bolt core which has a bottom end and a closed top end and an outer cylindrical mold positioned over the inner core with its top spaced from the top end of the inner dead mold core. The bottom open ends of the inner and outer cylindrical molds are closed by means which define a mold filling closure having a gate dimensioned so that the filling of the mold will effect first the solidification in the gates.

  • Patent number: 4627956
Abstract: There is provided a shock absorber for containers for the transportation and/or storage of radioactive materials consisting of one or more radially or axially arranged chambers which are filled with shock absorbing material characterized by the shock absorber containing cup spring shaped sheets having a curvature directed away from the container.

  • Patent number: 4579274
Abstract: There are needed for containers for the transportation and/or for the storage of spent fuel elements inner linings which guarantee a good heat contact to the outer container and have little operating expense. This is attained by placing in the outer container a bottom and a flange, then positioning therebetween and welding thereto a jacket provided with an axial slot and thereby a flexible diameter. The slot is then subsequently likewise covered and welded.

  • Patent number: 4562001
Abstract: For the transportation and long time storage of radioactive waste, especially of spent fuel elements, in suitable geological formations, there are needed multi-layered containers which guarantee a tight sealing even for a long period of time, are corrosion resistant to salt liquors, without being too expensive and too heavy. This is obtained by using for the individual layers of the container different metals or metal alloys which, from the outside inwardly, always are more noble (positive) in the electromotive (electrochemical) series.

  • Patent number: 4456827
Abstract: An improved container for transportation or storage of radioactive substances, especially spent nuclear fuel elements, has a cylindrical open-top thick-wall metallic body for shielding gamma radiation. A liner for the container has a top peripheral flange engaged with the bottom of a counterbore in the container open top. A thick gamma-ray shielding cover for the lining is disposed in the counterbore and screw means detachably secure both the lining flange and the cover to the body independently. The body has exterior generally parallel spaced cooling fins transversely intersected by flanges of lesser height to minimize fin cracks extending into the body. Neutron shielding is disposed in the exterior spaces between the fins and the flanges.

  • Patent number: 4432955
Abstract: A process for desorbing fission iodine from a solution in a dissolver containing nitric acid and nuclear fuel. At least part of the solution is distilled by boiling creating an iodine-containing vapor, and the condensate vapor is conducted in an ascending condenser in countercurrent with its condensate. The resulting condensate is the returned to the dissolver. The desorption of the iodine in the condenser is effected by means of a gas.

  • Patent number: 4367201
Abstract: Previously known extraction columns for fissionable material (nuclear fuel) and breeder material in the reprocessing of spent fuel elements with pulsation mechanisms working by air impulses, drag along the radioactive aerosols. These difficulties are avoided with the extraction column of the invention in which the column body contains a central tube filled with extraction agent which is connected with a pulsating pump via a multiple part sealing liquid container with the parts joined together according to the principle of communicating tubes.
