  • Patent number: 5917942
Abstract: An adaptive weighting handwriting recognition device and method compares information representing handwritten input with stored recognition data at least some of which has a weighting value associated therewith. The weighting values remains fixed during comparison of the handwritten input and stored recognition data and provide candidate recognition information, which can be further processed with user editing instructions to modify and correct the candidate recognition information. During user editing, the weighting values of the stored recognition data associated with the corrected candidate recognition information modified are varied to enhance the likelihood of correct future handwriting recognition.

  • Patent number: 5802251
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for reducing perplexity in a speech recognition system within a telephonic network based upon determined caller identity. In a speech recognition system which processes input frames of speech against stored templates representing speech, a core library of speech templates is created and stored representing a basic vocabulary of speech. Multiple caller-specific libraries of speech templates are also created and stored, each library containing speech templates which represent a specialized vocabulary and pronunciations for a specific geographic location and a particular individual. Additionally, the caller-specific libraries of speech templates are preferably processed to reflect the reduced bandwidth, transmission channel variations and other signal variations introduced into the system via a telephonic network.

  • Patent number: 5615296
Abstract: A continuous speech recognition and voice response system provides a natural sounding and effective interactive, speech-driven dialogue from a data processing system. A concatenation of words into phrases and sentences improves recognition and mimic natural language processing. The system uses speaker-independent, continuous-speech to initiate the playback of audio files. The system employs high-speed context switching to modify the active vocabulary and applies high-speed context switching to modify or activate Audio WAV voice response files. The system uses dialogue history to activate selected context, Baukus-Naur Form (BNF) grammars and WAV files and provides phrase or sentence long dialogue prompts to improve accuracy. The system also provides audio prompts to improve accuracy and provides speech-activated buttons to navigate between menus.

  • Patent number: 5524169
Abstract: A method and system for reducing perplexity in a speech recognition system based upon determined geographic location. In a mobile speech recognition system which processes input frames of speech against stored templates representing speech, a core library of speech templates is created and stored representing a basic vocabulary of speech. Multiple location-specific libraries of speech templates are also created and stored, each library containing speech templates representing a specialized vocabulary for a specific geographic location. The geographic location of the mobile speech recognition system is then periodically determined utilizing a cellular telephone system, a geopositioning satellite system or other similar systems and a particular one of the location-specific libraries of speech templates is identified for the current location of the system.

  • Patent number: 5424732
Abstract: Describes novel methods for compressing data character strings into "storage optimized indices" (SOIs) and stores their adaptive Ziv Lempel (AZL) indices, called "evolution based indices" (EBIs), in fields in corresponding entries in a SOI dictionary. The method also compresses data using the SOI dictionary, which accesses the corresponding EBIs for representing the compressed data. The EBIs are put into storage, or transmitted to a receiving location. Greater data compression processing efficiency is obtained by using the SOI dictionary than is available using prior types of AZL dictionaries. The disclosure further describes methods for decompressing EBI indices into corresponding phrases at a receiving location using either a conventional AZL dictionary or a SOI dictionary after translating received EBIs into SOIs. Also described is a submethod for phrase length determination for use in the decompression process.

  • Patent number: 5323155
Abstract: A method of transmitting compressed data using a Ziv-Lempel compression/expansion algorithm, using an adaptive Ziv-Lempel (AZL) dictionary modified to a mature state. The mature state is signaled by a time to freeze signal sent as a switch-over signal from a transmitting location to each receiving location. These signals freeze and synchronize the AZL dictionaries at both locations, and starts a translation of the frozen AZL dictionary to a static SZL dictionary--at least at the transmitting location. The SZL dictionary is then used to compress records being transmitted. An index translation process is generates translation information to allow the receiving locations to decompress SZL indices into original characters. The AZL-to-SZL dictionary translation process re-organizes the frozen AZL to an SZL dictionary. The SZL process is used until either the end of the inputted sequence, or a time to unfreeze signal is generated.

  • Patent number: 5228122
Abstract: A menu bypass system for an IBM 3270 type of display system. An IBM 3270 type display system includes a display terminal, a communications controller and a host computer running a host application which controls the terminal. The host computer and terminal communication use a protocol which allows the host to transmit data to and read data from the terminal at any time. After a transmission from the terminal to the host, the terminal is normally locked from further transmission until the host application responds. The menu bypass system allows transmission of request units generated by attention identifiers. These request units are stored in a queue and transmitted to the host one at a time in response to host commands. For certain host commands, such as erase/write, a previous write transmission from the controller to the terminal is aborted.
