  • Publication number: 20140289908
Abstract: Transgenic plants with enhanced punicic acid accumulation result from over-expression of PgFADX and PgFAD2, and optionally, one or more of PgDGAT1, PgDGAT2, and PgPDAT1. The invention also relates to novel isolated Punica granatum diacylglycerol acyltransferases: type 1 (PgDGAT1), type 2 (PgDGAT2) and phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferases (PgPDAT1); polynucleotide sequences encoding the DGATs and PDAT enzymes; polynucleotide constructs, vectors and host cells incorporating the polynucleotide sequences; and methods of producing and using same.

  • Patent number: 8269062
Abstract: This invention relates to nucleic acid sequences coding for a Lunaria annua, Cardamine graeca or Teesdalia nudicaulis fatty acid elongase, yeast cells expressing the genes/enzymes, plants themselves and cells of such plants and seeds which contain a heterologous gene coding for a L. annua, C. graeca or T. nudicaulis fatty acid elongase gene, the plant or seed being capable of producing increased proportion of a very long chain monounsaturated fatty acid, especially nervonic acid and eicosenoic acid, beyond that of a control plant or seed lacking the heterologous FAE gene or genes.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 21, 2006
Date of Patent: September 18, 2012
Assignee: National Research Council of Canada
Inventors: Vesna Katavic, Elzbieta Mietkiewska, David C. Taylor, Yiming Guo, Jennifer M. Brost
  • Patent number: 8124835
Abstract: A diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT1) gene from Tropaeolum majus encodes a DGAT1 polypeptide that regulates the production of triacylglycerols from diacylglycerols. Transformation of cells with the Tropaeolum majus DGAT1 (TmDGAT1) gene, or variants thereof, leads to changes in DGAT1 activity and alterations in oil and/or fatty acid content and/or seed weight. In particular, oil content, seed weight, erucic acid and/or trierucin content may be increased.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 12, 2007
Date of Patent: February 28, 2012
Assignee: National Research Council of Canada
Inventors: David C. Taylor, Jingyu Xu, Elzbieta Mietkiewska, Tammy Francis

  • Publication number: 20070204370
Abstract: This invention relates to seeds of plant, plants themselves and cells of such plants which comprise a heterologous gene coding for a plant (such as nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) or Crambe abyssinica) fatty acid elongase (FAE) gene or allelic variant thereof, or combinations of one or both of these FAE genes with an Arabidopsis fatty acid elongase 1 (FAE1) gene, in co-transformation, in reading frame alignment with a promoter capable of increasing expression of said gene(s), when said transformed plant cell is in a seed, said plant cell or seed being capable of producing an increase in proportion of a very long chain monounsaturated or saturated fatty acids when compared with the proportions of said fatty acids in a control plant cell or seed lacking said heterologous FAE gene or genes.
