  • Patent number: 5132033
Abstract: Lubricating oils contain an overbased oil-soluble composition prepared by adding water to a heated reaction mixture containing an alkaline earth metal halide, an alkaline earth metal salt of an alkaryl sulfonate, a hydrocarbon diluent-solvent, a lower alkanol, and an alkali metal oxide, and thereafter passing carbon dioxide through the reaction mixture.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 1, 1990
Date of Patent: July 21, 1992
    Assignee: Texaco Inc.
Inventors: Tze C. Jao, Jayne M. Vaccaro, Elzie D. Black
  • Patent number: 5108630
Abstract: In an overbased sulfonate process calcium hydroxide is formed in situ. The entire water charge and 30 to 50% of the calcium oxide is added. The temperature exotherm is observed. When the temperature ceases to rise, the remaining calcium hydroxide is added with temperature adjustment and carbonation is begun.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 10, 1990
Date of Patent: April 28, 1992
    Assignee: Texaco Inc.
Inventors: Elzie D. Black, Leonard A. Matthews, William J. Powers, III, Robert W. Erickson, Jr.
  • Patent number: 4973411
Abstract: An improved process for the preparation of sulfurized overbased alkaline earth metal phenates comprises steps of:(a) sulfurizing an alkylphenol with a sulfur halide in an alkane solvent;(b) neutralizing the sulfurized alkylphenol with an alkaline earth metal compound in a mixed solvent comprising an alkane and a lower alkanol to produce a sulfurized alkaline earth metal phenate;(c) carbonating said phenate with carbon dioxide to produce an overbased phenate; and(d) filtering and solvent stripping the reaction mixture to recover the phenate product. The products have a high degree of sulfurization with a substantial portion of monosulfide bonds and are substantially free from alkylene oxide residues.
