  • Patent number: 6155805
Abstract: A hermetic compressor including a hermetically sealed housing having a first housing shell and a second housing shell, a compressor unit disposed in the housing, a motor having a stator and a rotor, the rotor rotatably connected to a crankshaft drivingly connected to the compressor unit, a welding flange connected to the first and second housing shells to provide a hermetically sealed housing assembly, and an acoustic insulator interposed between the compressor unit and the welding flange, the acoustic insulator made from a vibration absorbing material, whereby the insulator reduces the communication of vibrations from the compressor unit to the housing during compressor operation.

  • Patent number: 5980222
Abstract: A compressor assembly includes a compressor mechanism mounted within a hermetically sealed housing. The housing is effectively divided into a low pressure area at a relatively low temperature and a high pressure area at a relatively high temperature. A motor and a lubrication system are contained within the low pressure area and the discharge side of the compressor mechanism is disposed in the high pressure area. A cylinder block effectively separates the high and low pressure areas of the compressor. The lubrication system includes an axial passage for communication oil from a sump to various compressor components, including rotational bearings. A seal cap is disposed at the end of the crankshaft that extends into the high pressure area and in combination with the cylinder block defines an oil discharge chamber at low pressure and isolated from the high pressure area.

  • Patent number: 5785151
Abstract: A compressor having an oil pick-up tube which filters incoming lubricant, and increases the volumetric pumping capacity of the compressor. The oil pick-up tube is attached to the crankshaft of the compressor, and is partially disposed within an oil sump also provided in the compressor. When the motor of the compressor is energized, the crankshaft and the oil pick-up tube rotate, and oil from the oil sump is drawn into the oil pick-up tube. A passageway is provided within the motor shaft to communicate oil from the oil pick-up tube to the compressor mechanism of the compressor for lubrication purposes. A cylindrical screen is also provided within the oil pick-up tube to both filter the incoming oil and provide a surface to which the oil adheres as it migrates upward through the rotating tube and expels the oil radially outward to increase the velocity of the migrating oil. The volumetric pumping capacity of the compressor is thereby increased.

  • Patent number: 5427506
Abstract: A compressor assembly is disclosed including a compressor mechanism mounted within a hermetically sealed housing. A cylinder block assembly, containing a plurality of reciprocating pistons within compression chambers, is covered by cylinder heads. The compression chambers include a discharge valve which permits compressed refrigerant to empty into a common discharge chamber. A pressure relief mechanism, formed by cylinder heads yieldably attached to the crankcase, is included within the compressor to eliminate damage caused by high pressure conditions such as slugging. Alternatively, pressure relief may be created in the common discharge chamber by a yieldably attached cage bearing or a valved port.

  • Patent number: 4969832
Abstract: A grounding clip for connecting an electrical grounding lead to the grounding stud of a compressor. The device includes an electrically conductive body having an aperture and a plurality of resilient ears adjacent the aperture for resiliently, frictionally engaging the stud when the stud is disposed in the aperture. The resilient ears permit axial movement of the stud through the aperture in one direction only and prevent axial movement of the stud through the aperture in the other axial direction. The device also includes an opening in which a threaded fastener is received to connect an electrical grounding lead thereby electrically connecting the grounding lead to the grounding stud and compressor housing.

  • Patent number: 4846635
Abstract: A hermetic compressor assembly is disclosed including a compressor mechanism and an electric drive motor within a hermetically sealed housing. The electric motor includes a rotatable rotor and a stator. In one disclosed embodiment, the stator is friction fit within the housing and a rotor is press fit over a crankshaft journalled in a crankcase of the compressor mechanism. The crankcase is selectively positioned within the housing and mounted thereto by means of mounting pins. In another disclosed embodiment, the motor is mounted to the compressor mechanism and the compressor crankcase is axially supported in the housing. A mounting pin is used to prevent rotation of the compressor mechanism within the housing caused by torque forces produced by dynamic operation of the motor. The disclosed mounting pins are received within holes in the crankcase and extend radially outwardly through oversized apertures in the housing. The pins are selectively positioned in the apertures prior to welding.

  • Patent number: 4840547
Abstract: A protective cap for the hermetic terminal of a hermetic compressor includes a cup-shaped plastic member for attaching to and covering the hermetic terminal during manufacturing, shipping, and storage of the compressor, i.e., whenever the hermetic terminal would not otherwise be connected to an external source of power. The cap contactingly engages the base portion and conducting pins of the hermetic terminal. The protective cap includes a cylindrical stud portion arranged coaxially within an outer cylindrical wall portion of the cup-shaped member. The stud portion slip fits radially inwardly of the circularly arranged conductor pins of the hermetic terminal. A tapered end facilitates guided insertion of the stud portion within the conductor pins prior to engagement of the cap with the hermetic terminal base portion.

  • Patent number: 4752190
Abstract: A compressor cylinder head assembly for a compressor which has a crankcase and a plurality of cylinders disposed in the crankcase. Each valve plate is spaced from the cylinder head by a valve plate gasket which is selected to have a thickness to provide the proper amount of clearance between the top of the piston and the valve plate to thereby keep the cylinder clearance in a predetermined range.

  • Patent number: 4743176
Abstract: A compressor assembly including an electric motor and a compressor crankcase. The compressor crankcase includes a suction inlet. A motor casing is secured to the crankcase. The suction inlet is connected by means of a first passage to the interior of the motor casing. A baffle located in the motor casing causes a portion of the inflowing refrigerant suction gas to be diverted to flow over and cool the rear windings of the motor. The remainder of the inflowing gas is caused to flow over and cool the front windings of the motor. After flowing over the windings, the two portions of the suction gas are recombined and the suction gas is then caused to flow out of the motor casing to the compressor cylinder suction inlet.

  • Patent number: 4739632
Abstract: An injection cooling arrangement for a rotary compressor whereby the heat of compression may be reduced more efficiently. A liquid refrigerant line is connected to the high pressure side of the refrigeration system between the condenser and the expansion device at one end thereof and at the other end is connected to a refrigerant inlet path located within the compression cylinder. The inlet path is connected to an orifice leading into the compression bore. The inlet path decreases in cross-sectional area as it leads from the liquid injection line to the orifice. The orifice is sized to allow for the restriction to take place at the entrance to the compression cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4607503
Abstract: A compressor and suction accumulator assembly wherein the suction accumulator is mounted on the casing of the compressor. The accumulator includes a cylindrical casing having two end walls. A first end wall includes an inlet aperture and the second end wall includes an outlet aperture. The second end wall is circular and substantially flat and has a thickness greater than the casing of the accumulator. The outlet aperture in the circular second end wall is spaced radially outwardly from the center of the second end wall near the periphery thereof and is spaced further outwardly from the compressor casing than the center of the circular end wall. A suction tube extends through the outlet aperture into the accumulator casing and is bent inwardly toward the center of the accumulator casing whereby the inlet opening of the suction tube is disposed coaxially with the cylindrical casing of the accumulator.
