  • Patent number: 6374956
Abstract: A brake unit has a ceramic friction ring connected directly to a wheel hub by fastening bolts or by a spline shaft connection. To ensure good heat insulation between the friction ring and the hub and to achieve uniform torque transmission between the friction ring and the hub, the contact area between the friction ring and the fastening elements of the hub is provided with a plastically deformable heat-insulating layer.

  • Patent number: 6302246
Abstract: A brake unit comprising at least one brake and at least one brake pad having at least one friction lining is described. The brake has a disk brake with a brake rotor made of a ceramic-metal composite (CMC) whose outer surface or surfaces at least partially form a friction surface for the at least one friction lining, and a disk brake cup that is mounted on the disk brake by way of one or more mounting elements. The friction surface of the disk brake has a hardness of approximately 1600 to 2500 HV, and the at least one friction lining has a coefficient of friction of approximately 0.3 to 0.5. The disk brake cup and/or the mounting elements form a corrosion-inhibiting attachment to the disk brake. The brake unit can be operated in corrosion-free fashion over a service life of at least approximately eight to 10 years or approximately 200,000 to 300,000 km.

  • Patent number: 6287500
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a brake rotor which includes a disc-shaped carrier and friction rings arranged on or on top of the carrier, so that the friction rings and carrier form a single piece construction. The carrier and friction ring(s) are separately molded into pre-forms, subsequently joined and finished formed in a press tool. The carrier and friction rings are made from carbon/carbon materials and ceramic materials respectively. The carrier has a hat-shaped cross-sectional shape with a flanged outer edge and the friction rings are attached to each side of the flanged edge of the carrier. The brake rotor may be directly mounted onto the wheel flange via the carrier using bolts.

  • Patent number: 6273222
Abstract: A brake unit including a brake disc of a material having a high thermal loading capacity and a brake pad that cooperates with it in tribological fashion. The brake disc is essentially made of a short-fiber reinforced ceramic material, whose thermal conductivity, in particular transversely to the disc surface, is at least 20 W/mK, preferably about 30 to 45 W/mK. The brake disc is combined with a brake pad having an organically bonded matrix. The brake pad may be a conventional series brake pad. The brake unit provides an optimal pairing of a brake disc, having a high thermal loading capacity, with a conventional brake pad in light of a reasonably expected brake pad service life, and in light of other tribological requirements, such as the friction coefficient.

  • Patent number: 6265071
Abstract: A brake unit includes a brake disc of a ceramic material and a brake pad that cooperates with it in tribological fashion. The brake pad is made of a sintered metal material or of an inorganically bound material having a ceramic binding phase and metal particles. The brake unit has a high thermal loading capacity, very good performance characteristics in terms of comfort, and an acceptable service life.
