  • Patent number: 11716829
Abstract: A head-mountable device can provide a cooling module that effectively manages heat while also minimizing noise, vibration, leakage, power consumption, size, and weight. To dissipate heat, the cooling module with a fan can be operated to move air through a chamber within the head-mountable device. An integrated heat sink can provide heat dissipation properties by drawing heat away from heat-generating components and into the chamber. The integrated heat sink can include a base plate that defines at least a portion of the chamber in which the blades of the fan are positioned. The integrated heat sink can further include fins between the chamber and an outlet. The fins can be integrated with the base plate to maximize heat dissipation and reduce the number of interfaces between separate parts.

  • Patent number: 11588377
Abstract: A fan motor suitable for use in an electronic device, such as a consumer electronic device, is disclosed. The fan motor includes a stator and a rotor. In order to minimize a varying torque applied to the rotor, the stator includes modifications. For example, the stator includes stator teeth, each with an arc defined by a radius of curvature that varies. The radius (from a reference point to the arc) can vary in accordance with a sinusoidal curve. Furthermore, the corners of each stator tooth may be rounded. The rounded corners of the stator teeth may include a uniform (or constant, non-varying) radius of curvature. These enhancement are designed to provide a more uniform torque by the stator to the rotor. As a result, the rotation of the rotor is subject to smaller fluctuations, and the fan motor undergoes less vibration and generates less acoustical noise.

  • Patent number: 8797677
Abstract: A disk drive including a disk having a bottom surface and a base having a first surface lying along a first plane and a second surface lying along a second plane positioned substantially parallel to the first plane. The second surface is spaced apart from the first surface and is beneath at least a portion of the bottom surface of the disk. A damper of the disk drive is located on the second surface adjacent the first surface and is configured to contact a portion of the bottom surface of the disk when the disk is deflected toward the first surface.

  • Patent number: 8743509
Abstract: A disk drive includes a disk drive base, and a spindle. A disk is attached to the spindle, and the disk includes a disk outer peripheral extent. An actuator is attached to the disk drive base and defines an actuator pivot axis that is substantially parallel to the spindle rotation axis. At least one actuator arm extends away from the actuator pivot axis. A head gimbal assembly (HGA) is attached to the at least one actuator arm. A first disk limiter tab protrudes from a side of the actuator towards the spindle rotation axis. The disk drive also includes a ramp that has a parking surface that is in contact with the HGA with the disk drive in a non-operational state. The first disk limiter tab extends over the disk outer peripheral extent in the non-operational state.

  • Patent number: 8446688
Abstract: Described herein is a disk drive having a disk receiving surface with an outer diameter. The drive can include a peripheral edge that extends transverse to the disk receiving surface and circumferentially about at least a portion of the outer diameter of the disk receiving surface. The drive can also include a disk limiter that extends between and transverse to the disk receiving surface and the peripheral edge to provide a transition between the disk receiving surface and a surface of the peripheral edge.

  • Patent number: 8289646
Abstract: A disk drive includes a spindle that defines a spindle rotation axis, and a disk drive base that has a base depression bounded by a first base depression brim. A disk is attached to the spindle, and the disk includes a disk outer peripheral extent. The disk drive includes a disk limiter protrusion extending over an arc of the disk outer peripheral extent that spans no more than 20° about the spindle rotation axis. According to one aspect of the invention, a first radius that extends from the spindle rotation axis over the first base depression brim is angularly disposed no more than 25° from any second radius that extends from the spindle rotation axis to the disk limiter protrusion. According to another aspect of the invention, the disk limiter protrusion may protrude from an edge of a VCM yoke top plate towards the spindle rotation axis.

  • Patent number: 5982580
Abstract: A noise damping system for a disc drive wherein the cover of the disc drive can be made or stamped out of a stainless steel constrained layer of viscoelastic damping material. The material of the cover consists of two layers of stainless steel with a thin layer of damping material sandwiched between. A foam material between the base section of the housing and the printed circuit board located below the housing avoid transmission of vibrations which would in turn generate noise.
