  • Patent number: 7687595
Abstract: A sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate is described which is produced by melt synthesis. A dihydroxy compound is reacted with a sulfobenzoic acid salt, then with an activated carbonate. The method results in a sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate which has a high percentage of sulfonated end groups, is soluble, and is transparent.

Date of Patent: March 30, 2010
Assignee: SABIC Innovative Plastics IP B.V.
Inventors: Daniel J. Brunelle, Martino Colonna, Maurizio Fiorini, Corrado Berti, Enrico Binassi
  • Publication number: 20100056693
Abstract: The invention relates to compositions of a semicrystalline thermoplastic and a dispersed phase of an organically modified clay, as well as a process for making the organically modified clay, which comprises contacting the clay with at least one imidazolium salt having two long alkyl chains, or a benzimidazolium salt having two long alkyl chains in the presence of a solvent, and recovering the organically modified clay having a d-spacing of clay intercalates of at least 28 ? and thermal stability at 300° C.

  • Patent number: 7557174
Abstract: The present invention provides carboxy-terminated oligomeric polyester compositions useful in the preparation of “weatherable” polymeric materials, for example weatherable copolyestercarbonates. In one aspect the present invention provides an oligomeric polyester composition comprising structural units derived from at least one diacid, at least one diaryl carbonate and at least one diol. The structural units derived from the diacid are present in a molar excess of from about 10% to about 40% based on a ratio of moles of diacid-derived structural units to moles of diol-derived structural units present in the oligomeric polyester composition. The oligomeric polyester composition is further characterized by the presence of at least some phenoxy end groups.

  • Publication number: 20090043069
Abstract: A process of making a sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate is described. A dihydroxy compound, a carbonate ester, and an activated ester of a sulfobenzoic acid salt are reacted together. The method results in a sulfonated telechelic polycarbonate which has a high percentage of sulfonated end groups, is soluble, and is transparent.

  • Publication number: 20080269396
Abstract: A composition comprises, based on the total weight of the composition, from 30 to 50 weight percent of an ionomeric telechelic polyalkylene ester comprising from 0.05 to 5 mole percent of sulfonate end groups; from 50 to 70 weight percent of a polycarbonate; from 0.1 to 10 weight percent of an organoclay; and from 2 to 12 weight percent of an impact modifier.

  • Publication number: 20070155946
Abstract: The above deficiencies in the art are alleviated by, in an embodiment, a method of preparing a carboxylic acid end-capped oligomer comprising melt reacting a dicarboxylic acid, a dihydroxy compound, a hydroxy end-capped soft block compound, a diaryl carbonate, and a catalyst, wherein the molar ratio of dihydroxy end-capped soft block compound to dihydroxy compound is 1:4 to 1:40, the molar ratio of dicarboxylic acid to the combined molar amounts of dihydroxy compound and hydroxy end-capped soft block compound is 1.01:1 to 2:1, and the molar ratio of diaryl carbonate to the combined molar amounts of dihydroxy compound and hydroxy end-capped soft block compound is 1.5:1 to 3:1. A carboxylic acid end-capped oligomer prepared by the above method is also disclosed. A thermosetting composition comprising the carboxylic acid end-capped oligomer, and an article comprising the thermosetting composition, are also disclosed.
