  • Patent number: 11248165
Abstract: Complexation of metal ions using chelating agents within a subterranean formation can often be desirable, such as to temper the formation of metal-containing precipitates. However, many chelating agents are produced commercially in an alkali metal salt form that may not be entirely suitable for use downhole, particularly in subterranean formations containing a siliceous material. The working pH range of some types of chelating agents may also be limiting. Treatment fluids comprising an aqueous carrier fluid having an acidic pH, a sulfonated iminodialkanoic acid, and ammonium ions may at least partially address downhole precipitation issues, while providing further advantages as well. Methods for forming sulfonated iminodialkanoic acids can comprise reacting an iminodialkylnitrile with a sultone under acidic conditions to form a fluid comprising a sulfonated iminodialkanoic acid and ammonium ions.

  • Publication number: 20210372274
Abstract: This disclosure presents systems to enable downhole bi-directional communications using a long length of electrical cable located within or partially within the internal diameter of a set of lower pipe segments and communicatively coupled to one or more upper pipe segments that utilize pipe cable attached to the outside diameter of each of the upper pipe segments. The long length of electrical cable and the one or more pipe cables from the upper pipe segments allow for communication coupling between downhole tools and surface equipment and surface computing systems. In some aspects, the pipe cable attached to the upper pipe segments can be protected from wear using clamps, collars, cages, and other protectors. In some aspects, an electrical signal generator and modulator can be located downhole proximate the downhole tools, uphole proximate one of the upper pipe segments, or proximate the surface equipment.
