  • Patent number: 7726273
Abstract: A diesel engine is fitted with a thin-walled wet liner fabricated of steel. The liner has a hardness that is within 10-20 Rc of the hardness of the piston rings carried on a piston within the liner. The inner surface of the liner is manufactured with a TRD=5Rvk (100?Mr2) of between 30 and 400 ?m, and a compound liner thickness to bore diameter in the range of 1.5 to 4 percent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 14, 2005
Date of Patent: June 1, 2010
    Assignee: Federal-Mogul World Wide, Inc.
    Inventors: Miguel Azevedo, Eric Highum
  • Patent number: 7617805
Abstract: A cylinder liner for receipt in an internal combustion engine cylinder block having a water cooling jacket surrounding a portion of the cylinder liner and method of construction thereof. The cylinder liner has a wall with an inner surface providing a cylinder bore extending along a central axis for reciprocation of a piston against an axial portion thereof and an outer surface opposite the axial portion. The outer surface has a hardened outer layer of purely martensitic microstructure for direct exposure to fluid in the water cooling jacket.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 22, 2007
Date of Patent: November 17, 2009

  • Patent number: 7024981
Abstract: A wrist pin for a heavy-duty piston assembly has a body with an axis of rotation and a generally cylindrical outer surface. The outer surface is adapted for pivotal connection to both a pair of laterally spaced pin bores and a small end of a connecting rod generally between the pin bores. The outer surface has a surface roughness equal to or less than 0.10 ?m. The outer surface has a Kurtosis value that is inversely proportional with the surface roughness such that a product of the Kurtosis value and the surface roughness is between about 0.30 ?m to 0.60 ?m. The outer surface has a skewness of about ?1.0 to 0.0 and a lay angle relative to the axis of about 85 to 95 degrees.
