Publication number: 20230000498Abstract: A minimally invasive precision cutting guide, targeting guide, implant, and other instruments comprise a system that permits a physician to surgically correct a bunion or similar deformity with a minimum disruption of surrounding soft tissue. The precision cutting guide ensures that the physician cuts bone in the proper location and orientation. Each of the instruments is designed to minimize disruption to surrounding soft tissue. The system also precisely locates an orthopedic implant such that it can fixate two bone fragments after an osteotomy, or two bones after surgery. The precision cutting guide, targeting guide, implant, and other instruments are provided in a sterile kit for the convenience of the surgeon and safety of the patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 9, 2020Publication date: January 5, 2023Inventors: Robby A. Amiot, Joseph P. Ritz, Eric Marcano

Patent number: 11090095Abstract: An orthopedic fixation system includes a sterile packaged implant kit and a sterile packaged instrument kit. The sterile packaged implant kit includes at least one surgical implant, an insertion device, and an implant package adapted to receive the at least one surgical implant and the insertion device therein. The implant package maintains the at least one surgical implant and the insertion device sterile after sterilization of the sterile packaged implant kit. The sterile packaged instrument kit includes one or more instruments necessary to use the sterile packaged implant kit and an instrument package adapted to receive the one or more instruments therein. The instrument package maintains the one or more instruments sterile after sterilization of the sterile packaged instrument kit.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 2018Date of Patent: August 17, 2021Assignee: BioMedical Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Adam T. Knight, Daniel F. Cheney, Eric A. Marcano, David J. Pancratz

Patent number: 11051804Abstract: An orthopedic fixation system fuses bone, bones, or bone pieces in a predetermined anatomical position. The orthopedic fixation system includes an implant that transitions between an unconstrained shape and a constrained insertion shape, a drill guide, first and second K-wires, and a cannulated drill bit. The drill guide and the first and second K-wires retain the bone, bones, or bone pieces in an anatomical position corresponding with the predetermined anatomical position. The cannulated drill bit fits over the first and second K-wires and drills, respectively, first and second drilled holes into the bone, bones, or bone pieces. After insertion of the implant into the first and second drilled holes, the implant attempts to transition from its constrained insertion shape to its unconstrained shape such that the implant continuously compresses the bone, bones, or bone pieces thereby holding the bone, bones, or bone pieces in the predetermined anatomical position.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2019Date of Patent: July 6, 2021Assignee: Depuy Synthes Products, Inc.Inventors: Glenn Gaston, Daniel F. Cheney, Joseph P. Ritz, Eric A. Marcano, Luke A. Perkins, Diana M. Castillo Sanchez

Patent number: 9775659Abstract: An implant storage and insertion system for a shape memory orthopedic implant allows the implant to be constrained in a deformed state, protected, insulated, held for insertion, and properly positioned in bone. The implant storage and insertion system includes a restraining block having an impact surface. The restraining block engages an implant at a first end, and further a medical instrument engages the restraining block and positions the restraining block at a bone such that the impact surface may be impacted to insert a second end of the implant into the bone.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 2014Date of Patent: October 3, 2017Assignee: BioMedical Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Daniel F. Patent number: 9585656Abstract: An implant insertion system includes a shape memory implant movable between a first shape a second shape and an implant insertion device movable between an implant disengagement position and an implant engagement position. The implant insertion device receives the shape memory implant in its first shape while in its implant disengagement position. Movement of the implant insertion device from its implant disengagement position to its implant engagement position manipulates the shape memory implant from its first shape to its second shape. The implant insertion device maintains the shape memory implant in its second shape until delivery of the shape memory implant into tissue or bone.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 2014Date of Patent: March 7, 2017Assignee: BioMedical Enterprises, Inc.Inventors: Joseph H.
