  • Patent number: 8991383
Abstract: An oven appliance is provided that uses the space behind oven rack supports formed in the side walls of the cooking chamber to provide for convection air flow. Slots or openings are provided along the supports for the flow of air into the cooking chamber. Additional features may be provided to further assist in directing the convection air flow. Such distribution of the convection air can provide for a more uniform flow of the heated, convection air while also conserving the space available in the oven for the cooking chamber.

  • Patent number: 8993328
Abstract: The present invention provides systems and methods for improving the efficiency of a transient gene delivery system to differentiating embryonic stem (ES) cells by serum starving the targeted cells for one to three days prior to transfection. Such a serum starvation surprisingly resulted in increased expression of a constitutively-controlled plasmid from 50.4% to 83.2% of the population and increased expression of a promoter/enhancer controlled plasmid from ˜1.4% to ˜3.7% of the population.

  • Patent number: 8991096
Abstract: A fishing hook has a head having at least two vertically arranged holes through which a fishing line is inserted. When the fishing line is threaded through both of the vertically disposed holes, the hook is stabilized in a substantially orthogonal posture relative to the fishing line, thus enhancing the likelihood of catching fish, especially with a drop-shot technique. Because the single head is small and compact, it is not exposed when the lure is affixed to the hook, thereby improving the likelihood that fish will be tempted by the lure.

  • Patent number: 8992984
Abstract: Various embodiments provide materials and methods for synthesizing protocells for use in targeted delivery of cargo components to cancer cells. In one embodiment, the lipid bilayer can be fused to the porous particle core to form a protocell. The lipid bilayer can be modified with targeting ligands or other ligands to achieve targeted delivery of cargo components that are loaded within the protocell to a target cell, e.g., a type of cancer. Shielding materials can be conjugated to the surface of the lipid bilayer to reduce undesired non-specific binding.

  • Patent number: 8992050
Abstract: In some examples, a projection display surface is configured to reflect a first image or image portion in a first direction and a second image or image portion in a second direction. In some cases, first light corresponding to the first image is projected onto a display surface that includes a first plurality of reflectors configured to reflect the first light in a first direction, but not reflect second light corresponding to the second image. The display surface may further include a second plurality of reflectors to reflect the second light in a second direction, but not reflect the first light. In some examples, the first light is within a first wavelength range and the second light is within a second, different wavelength range. In other examples, the first light has a first polarization and the second light has a second, different polarization.

  • Patent number: 8993525
Abstract: Pharmacological chaperone compounds and methods for the treatment of an individual having, or at risk of having, a disease condition associated with alpha-1-antitrypsin by using said compounds are disclosed. In particular, such methods are useful for the treatment or prevention of lung disorders associated with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency as well as liver disorders associated with an excess of alpha-1-antitrypsin. Suitable pharmacological chaperones include peptides and low-molecular weight compounds. Also provided is an assay for determining whether a test compound modulates alpha-1-antitrypsin activity.

  • Patent number: 8996476
Abstract: Apparatus, methods and media for correcting a defective check processing datum. The apparatus may include, and the methods and media may involve, a receiver that is configured to receive from memory a first transaction record. The transaction record may include Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR) line data. The MICR line data may be electronically read from a check. The transaction record may include non-MICR data. The non-MICR data may be electronically read from the check. The apparatus may include, and the methods and media may involve, a processor that is configured to identify a defective datum among the MICR line data. The processor may identify a portion of the non-MICR data that corresponds to the defective datum. The processor may store in memory a second transaction record. The second transaction record may include corrected data that includes an element that is derived from the identified portion of the non-MICR data.

  • Patent number: 8992770
Abstract: Methods are provided for characterizing crude oils, crude fractions, or other potential feedstocks for forming lubricating base oils in order to determine the suitability of a feedstock for lubricating base oil production. One type of characterization is to determine the isoparaffin, naphthene, and/or aromatics contents of the distillate portion of a feedstock. A second characterization is to determine the viscosity index of a distillate portion of a feedstock after dewaxing the distillate portion to a target pour point.

  • Patent number: 8996824
Abstract: A method for controlling memory refresh operations in dynamic random access memories. The method includes determining a count of deferred memory refresh operations for a first memory rank. Responsive to the count approaching a high priority threshold, issuing an early high priority refresh notification for the first memory rank, which indicates the pre-determined time for performing a high priority memory refresh operation at the first memory rank. Responsive to the early high priority refresh notification, the behavior of a read reorder queue is dynamically modified to give priority scheduling to at least one read command targeting the first memory rank, and one or more of the at least one read command is executed on the first memory rank according to the priority scheduling. Priority scheduling removes these commands from the re-order queue before the refresh operation is initiated at the first memory rank.

  • Patent number: 8997254
Abstract: Methods and systems to allow for the streaming of media from a file server to a client, where the streaming occurs concurrently with the execution of an information security protocol. The security protocol allows the client to securely receive one or more keys that allow the client to access the media. This permits a user to access the media sooner than would otherwise be possible, while allowing timely performance of security related processing.

  • Patent number: 8993949
Abstract: In a solar concentrator of a type having a curved mirror adapted to focus light onto an energy collecting body mounted at the mirror's focal axis, an alignment correction apparatus and method includes a linear array of light detectors adapted to be mounted at a bottom of and across a centerline of the curved mirror so as to intercept the shadow cast by the energy collecting body mounted along the focal axis. Outputs of each of the detectors are measured and plotted according to an order of arrangement of the light detectors on the array. The output results in a dip across adjacent detectors when a shadow falls across the array. A shadow detection means is adapted to determine a center point of the dip and correction means are configured to output a correction command if the center point is different from an optimal position.

  • Patent number: 8996754
Abstract: An input module for an industrial controller is configurable to simplify setup and commissioning. The input module includes input terminals configurable, for example, as a counter input. Still other input terminals may be configured to trigger events as a function of the input signals present at the terminals. Time signals corresponding to transitions in state of the input terminals, triggering of events, or operation of the counters may be recorded. The input module is further configurable to transmit data back to the processor or to transmit data directly to another module in the industrial control network.

  • Patent number: 8990987
Abstract: A layered cushion that may be fully disassembled for easy cleaning is disclosed herein. The sleep system is durable and fire retardant. The layered cushion may include a foam layer, a layer of void cells, and a cover. The foam permits fluids to move freely there through and contours to a user's body to maximize comfort and reduce interface pressure. The reticulated foam layer resists compression set and thermosetting. The layer of void cells also permits fluids to move freely there through and provide additional support to the user's body. The individual void cells of the void cell layer are perforated to allow the transmission of fluids there through. The cover couples the other layers together to form the layered cushion and prevents the layers from deteriorating. The cover is removable to permit cleaning each of the layers independently.
