  • Publication number: 20070114695
Abstract: An installation and a method of preparing a continuous strand mat, the strands coming from at least one roving thrown onto a conveyor belt. In the method at least one roving package supported on a spindle is paid out via the outside, a rate of the pay-out imposed by a motor acting directly on the roving package so that linear speed of the paid-out roving is constant; then the roving passes through a nozzle, by passing through an entry and then an exit of the nozzle, the nozzle also provided with a transverse injection of at least one fluid mainly directed toward the exit of the nozzle, inducing a tension toward the bottom of the roving, the fluid also dividing the roving; and then the strands forming the roving are thrown in an oscillatory movement onto the conveyor belt.

  • Patent number: 5849085
Abstract: A process and device for manufacturing cut threads according to which glass threads composed of continuous filaments are coated with a liquid non-aqueous size, which can react under the effect of actinic radiation. The threads are cut by a member which is also used to draw or entrain the threads mechanically before they are subjected to actinic radiation.

  • Patent number: 5736246
Abstract: A sizing composition is provided that includes at least one silane satisfying the following formula:Si(R.sup.1) (R.sup.2) (R.sup.3) (R.sup.4)wherein:R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each, independently, an alkoxy group;R.sup.3 is an alkoxy group or a hydrocarbon radical that optionally contains one or more nitrogens;R.sup.4 is a hydrocarbon radical that optionally contains one or more nitrogens, and includes at least one unsaturated ring substituted with at least one unsaturated chain conjugated with the unsaturated ring, that is useful for coating glass strands for reinforcement of organic or inorganic materials, the glass strands coated with such sizing compositions and the reinforced composite materials prepared therefrom, having mproved corrosion resistance, particularly in alkaline media.

  • Patent number: 5171634
Abstract: A process for producing coated glass yarns which comprises drawing a plurality of fibers formed from strands of molten glass, applying to the strands a sizing coating comprising at least a monounsaturated or polyunsaturated oligomer and a photostarter composition such as a photoinitiator compound, a photosensitizer compound or a mixture thereof and optionally an organic solvent and an additive composition comprising at least one of a wetting agent, an adhesion promoting agent, an antishrinking agent and a coupling agent, gathering the coated strands into a yarn and irradiating the coated yarn with a source of actinic radiation.
