  • Patent number: 9106120
Abstract: A method of fabricating an armature for a motor includes providing a laminated assembly having a length, a central axis, and a plurality of open slots each extending the length and each configured to locate one conductor at a first greater radial distance from the central axis and another conductor at a second lesser radial distance from the central axis. A first conductor is inserted into a first one of the slots at the greater radial distance such that the first conductor extends out of the first one of the slots. A free end of the inserted first conductor is bent in each of a first direction and a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. A second conductor is inserted into a second one of the slots at the lesser radial distance such that the second conductor extends out of the second one of the slots. A free end of the inserted second conductor is bent in each of the two orthogonal directions.

  • Publication number: 20140239767
Abstract: A rotor for an electric machine includes a rotor core defining an axis of rotation, a plurality of windings positioned on the rotor core, and a commutator extending from the rotor core. The commutator includes an elongated contact portion and a riser connected to an end of the elongated contact portion. The riser includes a circumferential wall extending radially outward from the end of the elongated contact portion. The circumferential wall includes a V-shaped top portion with a plurality of notches formed in the V-shaped top portion.

  • Patent number: 8723380
Abstract: A starter motor including a frame having a terminal mounting portion, and a field fixedly mounted relative to the frame. An armature is rotatably supported relative to the field. A conductor having a terminal mounting section is electrically connected to one of the field and the armature. A terminal extends through the terminal section of the conductor and the terminal mounting portion of the frame. The terminal includes a plurality of threads. A conductor mounting element threadably engages with the plurality of threads. The conductor mounting element is configured to form a threaded clamped connection that establishes a solid metal compressive stack up connection between the conductor and the terminal.

  • Publication number: 20140096373
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for fabricating an armature for a motor. In some embodiments, the conductors of an armature are bent according to a non-linear profile that results in better management of conductor stresses, and better final alignment of the position of the conductor free end.

  • Publication number: 20130207492
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide an electric machine module including a housing. The housing can include a machine cavity. In some embodiments, an electric machine can be at least partially positioned within the machine cavity and can include a stator assembly. The stator assembly includes a stator core with slots. In some embodiments, conductors can be positioned in the slots. The conductors include a turn portion extending between leg portions. The leg portions include an angled portion and a connection portion. The conductors are disposed within the plurality of slots so that the angled and connection portions extend from the stator core at a first axial side. At least one insulation member can be disposed over at least some of the leg portions so that the connection portions are at least partially uncovered.
