Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method for separating and analyzing particles in a microfluidic flow. The method comprises the step of providing a microfluidic channel having an array of static optical traps disposed therein. A flow of solution is then provided through the channel, wherein the solution contains one or more particles. The particles are separated, diverted or retained by the static optical traps that are positioned in a predetermined array, and, if desired, focused in a path for analytical purposes.
