Patent number: 6701045Abstract: This specification discloses a planar optical waveguide DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer), which is an integrated DWDM made by using the planar optical waveguide manufacturing technology. A diffractive grating is used in a planar optical path to direct beams of different wavelengths in a beam into different directions. An arrayed waveguide installed at the output end of the planar optical path couples the beams of different wavelengths to an optical fiber connected at the output end, separating the waves. On the other hand, a preferred embodiment of the invention has an arrayed lens between the diffractive grating and the arrayed waveguide. The arrayed lens can correct the deviated diffractive beams due to thermal deformation of the diffractive grating and conduct them into the arrayed waveguide.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 2001Date of Patent: March 2, 2004Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventors: Ying-Tsung Lu, Eric G. Patent number: 6163038Abstract: A white light-emitting diode and a method of fabricating the same diode are disclosed. The white light-emitting diode is fabricated by epitaxy, which can produce two peaks in the spectrum at the P-N junction by appropriately adjusting epitaxial parameters such as temperature, pressure, NH.sub.3 flux and the ratio of H.sub.2 to N.sub.2 or the concentration of dopant, such as Mg or Si. The diode can thus radiate white light by adjusting the wavelength and the intensity of the principal peak in the two peaks. Further, quantum well structure can be formed in the diode. By appropriately adjusting the epitaxial parameters, the spectrum of the quantum well structures may have more than one peak. Therefore, white light can be generated by combining the light with wavelengths at two or three different peaks. The white LED can radiate white light itself and need not involve combining many LEDs, so that the cost and the difficulty of fabricating the white LED lamp can be reduced.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1998Date of Patent: December 19, 2000Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventors: Chin-Yuan Chen, Chao-Nien Huang, Fei-Chang Hwang, Ming-Huang Hong, Eric G. Patent number: 6137637Abstract: A prism-type objective lens is provided for use in the pickup head of an optical disc drive capable of driving two types of optical discs such as a CD and a DVD. The prism-type objective lens allows the pickup head to be made more compact in size with reduced structural complexity, and also allows the pickup head to read data from two different types of optical discs. The prism-type objective lens includes a prism having a cross section substantially in the shape of a right triangle, a front aspherical plano-convex lens, and a rear aspherical plano-convex lens, where the planar surface of each lens is attached to one or the other of the leg sides of the prism. The hypotenuse side of the prism can be formed with two aperture areas where different reflective layers are coated. Alternatively, the hypotenuse side of the prism can be formed with a reflective HOE layer that allows the laser beam incident on it and reflected from it to be diffracted into two beams which are focused at different points.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1999Date of Patent: October 24, 2000Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventors: Jau-Jiu Ju, Eric G. Patent number: 5923110Abstract: A spindle motor for a disc drive, such as a CD-ROM drive, is provided. This spindle motor is a brushless motor of a single-phase axial-winding and radial-gap type including a stator, a rotor coupled to said stator, and a driving circuit for supplying a driving signal to the stator to rotate the rotor. The stator includes a pair of upper and bottom salient-pole pieces formed with a plurality of tooth-like portions serving as salient-poles. The peak surface of each tooth-like portion is formed into a symmetrical convex shape, which minimizes the cogging torque of the motor. Further, the use of a phase-adjuster in the driving circuit allows the motor to produce large output torque at high speeds. The output characteristics of this spindle motor meet the requirements of high speed CD-ROM drives.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1997Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Assignees: Industrial Technology Research Institute, Sunonwealth Electric Machine Industry Co., Ltd.Inventors: Chi-Mou Zhao, Chin-Po Liao, Shyh-Jier Wang, Min-Der Wu, Der-Ray Huang, Tai-Fa Ying, Eric-G. Patent number: 5021906Abstract: An air bearing slider according to the present invention provides a programmable slider wherein the fly height of the read/write head may be conveniently controlled using electrical signals. In an air bearing slider according to the present invention, the rear of the slider is made to fly lower by altering the angle of attack of a rear air bearing region. In one embodiment of the present invention, a slider configuration includes a first air bearing region at the leading edge of the slider and a second air bearing region at the slider's trailing edge. The first air bearing region includes a tapered region. A deformable central region, including a non air bearing surface, joins the first and second air bearing regions and controls the relative angle between the air bearing surfaces. The relative angle is adjusted by deforming the central region using a layer of piezoelectric material which overlays the central region.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1989Date of Patent: June 4, 1991Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Shuo H. Patent number: 4596479Abstract: The present invention relates to a dot matrix printer which makes use of multiple dot patterns distributed on the cylinder, belt, hand or drum of a line printer to provide an improved printing throughput for an all addressable line printer. In a dot-helix matrix printer, different arrangements of the dots are used which can be varied in position and spacing to increase printing speed. On a belt, band or drum line printer, multiple dot patterns are given a predetermined distribution. More specifically, arrangements of dots are used which provide enhanced performance due to the fact that they are determined by an analysis of the statistical occurrence of a particular dot pattern in a character set. The higher statistical probability dot patterns are used more often on the belt, band or drum.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1985Date of Patent: June 24, 1986Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Eric G. Patent number: 4329876Abstract: Electronically focused and automatically scanning acoustic bulk waves are produced by scattering chirp acoustic bulk waves at grazing incidence from an acoustic grating. The same apparatus may be used in reverse to convert diverging acoustic bulk waves produced by a focused beam into chirp acoustic bulk waves. A pulse compression filter then converts the chirp waves into signals describing the source.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1980Date of Patent: May 18, 1982Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Wen-Hsien Chen, Eric G. Patent number: 4322127Abstract: A casting is made of a corner having three mutually intersecting flat surfaces, one of which is perpendicular to the other two, while a fiber end is positioned against the corner in an orientation such that the end of the fiber butts against said one corner surface and the side surface of the fiber tangentially touches said other two corner surfaces. Two such castings, each carrying a fiber end, are aligned with each other in an alignment frame having two flat alignment surfaces which are oriented with respect to each other at the same orientation as the two corner surfaces which tangentially touch the fiber side surface. Since these orientations are the same, the castings fit precisely into the groove formed by the two flat alignment surfaces of the frame and can be moved toward each other until they touch. In this position the fiber ends carried by the castings are butt aligned.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1979Date of Patent: March 30, 1982Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Liam D. Patent number: 4156206Abstract: A semiconductor laser and optical waveguide are coupled together along a common optical axis and bounded at remote ends with reflective surfaces to form an optical resonant cavity. A periodic grating formed in a side surface of the optical waveguide directs some radiant energy out of the cavity in a direction not parallel with the common optical axis.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1976Date of Patent: May 22, 1979Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Liam D.
