Patent number: 10092995Abstract: A method of grinding the tooth slots of a workpiece with a freshly dressed grinding wheel wherein dual-machining of tooth slots is eliminated. The method comprises grinding the first few slots of a gear at a corrected depth amount which accounts for the rapid wear and other conditions of the freshly dressed grinding wheel wherein for a first number of tooth slots (e.g. 1, 2, 3 or more), the grinding wheel is fed-in relative to the workpiece by the corrected depth amount.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2015Date of Patent: October 9, 2018Assignee: THE GLEASON WORKSInventors: Uwe Gaiser, Eric G. Mundt

Patent number: 8660684Abstract: A method of determining a desired power level (P) as a function of relative tool to workpiece position, thereby enabling adaptive control advantages that were previously inaccessible for machining, such as bevel gear grinding, from solid applications. Preferably, set point power is expressed as a function of specific power (P?, P?) and roll position (Q) for a generated gear or as a function of specific power and plunge position for a non-generated (i.e. Formate) gear. Specific power is defined and preferably remains as defined during machining even as process conditions vary during machining.Type: GrantFiled: June 6, 2011Date of Patent: February 25, 2014Assignee: The Gleason WorksInventors: Eric G. Mundt, Richard F. Culbert, Jr.

Patent number: 6824449Abstract: An apparatus for clamping a workpiece in a machine. The apparatus comprises an inner nose portion being rotatable about an axis of rotation and comprising a plurality of mounting surfaces, and, an outer ring portion rotatable about the axis of rotation and comprising at least one clamp operable between an unclamped position and a clamped position. In the unclamped position, the inner nose portion is rotationally positionable about the axis relative to the clamp such that a workpiece positioned against the mounting surfaces may be oriented relative to the clamp to a position at which with the clamp being operated to the clamped position, the workpiece is clamped against the mounting surfaces. The clamping results in a coupling of the inner nose portion and the outer ring portion whereby with a clamped workpiece, the inner nose portion and the outer ring portion are rotatable together and are positionable about the axis.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2003Date of Patent: November 30, 2004Assignee: The Gleason WorksInventors: Michael G. Regna, Sean C. Woodyard, Eric G. Mundt

Patent number: 6217409Abstract: A method of dressing a threaded grinding wheel such that twisting of workpiece tooth flanks does not occur during grinding. The grinding wheel is preferably dressed with a circular arc hollow-crowned generating front with the generating front being described by a radius, Rb, and dressed into an axial plane of the grinding wheel. The workpiece is then relatively shifted across the grinding wheel along a feed shift vector which is oriented perpendicular to the axis of the workpiece. With this method, the effects of flank twist can be eliminated, or, a controlled amount of flank twist can be introduced not only in helical gears, but also in spur gears. The grinding wheel may also be dressed with a circular arc barrel-shaped generating front. The principles of the present invention may also be applied to hobbing tools.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 1999Date of Patent: April 17, 2001Assignee: The Gleason WorksInventors: Hermann J. Stadtfeld, Eric G. Mundt
