  • Patent number: 5428075
Abstract: A method is provided for regenerating deactivated sulfonated aromatic organic ion-exchange resin beds, such as a polystyrene ion-exchange resin bed, having chemically combined amino organo mercaptan groups with anhydrous phenol at an elevated temperature.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 2, 1994
Date of Patent: June 27, 1995
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: Eric J. Pressman, Sheldon J. Shafer
  • Patent number: 5414151
Abstract: A method is provided for making bisphenol by condensing a ketone and a phenol in the presence of a sulfonated aromatic organic polymeric ion-exchange catalyst having aminoorganomercaptan groups using a phenol having less than 1 ppm of hydroxyacetone.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 2, 1994
Date of Patent: May 9, 1995
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: Eric J. Pressman, Sheldon J. Shafer
  • Patent number: 5399734
Abstract: Improved yields of aromatic organic carbonates made by the palladium catalyzed direct carbonylation of aromatic organic hydroxy compounds can be achieved if the total gas pressure and partial pressure of carbon monoxide and oxygen are substantially maintained during the reaction.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 20, 1993
Date of Patent: March 21, 1995
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: Joseph A. King, Jr., Patricia D. Mackenzie, Eric J. Pressman
  • Patent number: 5312955
Abstract: A method for making aromatic organic carbonate, such as diphenyl carbonate is provided which employs a transition metal catalyst in the form of a palladium catalyst mixture. The palladium catalyst can be used in combination with an organic cocatalyst, such as a terpyridine and a cobalt cocatalyst in the form of a cobalt complex containing a pentadentate ligand. The aromatic organic carbonate is separated from the carbonylation reaction mixture as a 1:1 molar adduct of aromatic organic carbonate such as diphenyl carbonate and aromatic organic hydroxy compound, such as phenol. The transition metal catalyst has been found to be recyclable allowing for the introduction of make up aromatic organic hydroxy compound into the reactor under ambient conditions.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 17, 1992
Date of Patent: May 17, 1994
    Assignee: General Electric Company
Inventors: Eric J. Pressman, Sheldon J. Shafer
