    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Emmerson Bowes, Malvina Farcasiu, Eric J. Y. Scott
  • Patent number: 4548709
Abstract: Residual oils containing metals and sulfur are demetalized and desulfurized by adding to the oil an aromatic solvent and contacting the mixture in the presence of hydrogen with an alumina having dual pore size distribution in ranges of 90-200 Angstrom units and 1000-5000 Angstrom units.
    Type: Grant

Inventors: Emmerson Bowes, Malvina Farcasiu, Eric J. Y. Scott
  • Patent number: 4486298
Abstract: A process for the demetalation of heavy petroleum residua is provided wherein said residua dispersed in a suitable solvent is contacted with a large pore solid sorbent whereby organomettalic compounds or complexes contained in said residua are selectively adsorbed by the large pore solid sorbent.

    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Emmerson Bowes, Susan D. Brandes, Malvina Farcasiu, Eric J. Y. Scott
  • Patent number: 4439310
Abstract: A method for upgrading a high boiling hydrocarbon fraction by reducing the molecular weight of at least a portion of the waxy or non-waxy constituents of the fraction with a catalyst composed of a heat stable crystalline zeolite in a matrix comprising a degraded heat-sensitive crystalline zeolite.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 16, 1981
Date of Patent: March 27, 1984
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Costandi A. Audeh, Eric J. Y. Scott
  • Patent number: 4171260
Abstract: This invention provides a method for reducing the level of thiophenic sulfur compounds in a heavy carbonaceous oil feed which involves contacting the oil feed with a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkanol in the presence of a non-acidic zeolite catalyst. The reaction equilibrium in the process favors the displacement of thiophene sulfur atoms by oxygen atoms.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 28, 1978
Date of Patent: October 16, 1979
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Malvina Farcasiu, Eric J. Y. Scott
  • Patent number: 4021334
Abstract: A stabilized lubricating oil resistant to oxidation and sludge formation upon exposure to an oxidative environment is prepared without forming undesirable color bodies therein by the steps (1) contacting the lubricating oil stock with a small amount of added elemental sulfur of from about 0.05 to about 1.0 percent by weight at a contact temperature of from about 25.degree. C. to about 130.degree. C. and (2) contacting the product of step (1) with hydrogen in the presence of alumina impregnated with at least about 10 weight percent MoO.sub.3 and at least about 2.5 weight percent CoO to remove any unreacted added elemental sulfur therefrom. The impregnated alumina catalyst of step (2) must have at least 50 percent of the pores with a pore diameter of 50 Angstrom Units or more.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 8, 1976
Date of Patent: May 3, 1977
    Assignee: Mobil Oil Corporation
Inventors: Robert L. Gorring, Eric J. Y. Scott, Robert L. Smith
  • Patent number: 3972853
Abstract: A stabilized lubricating oil resistant to oxidation and sludge formation upon exposure to an oxidative environment is prepared without forming undesirable color bodies therein by contacting the lubricating oil stock with a small amount of elemental sulfur of from about 0.1 to about 0.5 percent by weight at a contact temperature of from about 25.degree.C to about 70.degree.C and, thereafter, removing any unreacted sulfur therefrom.
