  • Publication number: 20180056087
Abstract: A wound dressing and method of use is provided that increases healing of tissues by targeting damaged tissue at a predetermined wavelength. The device includes the use of a negative pressure bandage, a flexible light sheet, and one or more bioactive marine extracts. Light emitted from the flexible light sheet penetrates through the bandage to target damaged tissue, which accelerates the wound healing process and works synergistically with the negative pressure bandage and bioactive marine extracts such as collagen fibers, alginate, chitosan and fucoidan, or any combination thereof to accelerate healing.

  • Publication number: 20130263916
Abstract: An inverted organic solar photovoltaic cell is described that may be fabricated onto rigid or flexible substrates using spray-on technology to apply the various layers of the cell. Indium tin oxide with a thin layer of cesium carbonate functions as the cathode for the novel inverted cells. An active layer of poly-3(hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl C61-butyric acid methylester having a thickness around 200 nm to 600 nm facilitates a high level of light transmittal through the cell. A modified PEDOT:PSS, made by doping a conductive polymer with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), functions as the anode. A method of forming the inverted organic solar photovoltaic cell is also described using gas-propelled spraying to achieve thin layers. After the layers are formed, the cell is sealed using a vacuum and temperature-based annealing and encapsulation with UV-cure epoxy.

  • Patent number: 8024423
Abstract: A system, method, and computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for maintaining connections between a mobile device and a server are described herein. In an embodiment, the method operates by receiving a data request from the mobile device, the data request identifying at least a timeout interval. The method comprises sending the data request to a data server and then determining whether the timeout interval has passed. The method also comprises sending a keep alive message to the mobile device indicating that the request has timed out if it is determined that the timeout interval has passed. The method then receives a re post request from the mobile device, the re post request identifying a timeout interval. The method further comprises receiving a response from the data server, the response including at least data requested by the mobile device and then sends the response to the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 7365461
Abstract: A crash management system for implementation in a flywheel energy storage system (FESS) is provided. Implementation of such a system entails designing an FESS rim that is highly failure resistant, and designing the FESS such that if one, some, or even all of its components fail, they are physically prevented from accumulating and releasing enough energy to cause rim burst, thus leaving the rim intact and capable of safely remaining spinning even after one or more FESS component failures have occurred.

  • Publication number: 20080062728
Abstract: A method of controlling a power converter is used to interface to a power grid or supply network operating at a frequency (Fnet) that is nominally fixed (say at 50 Hz, for example) but which can be varied as a way of controlling power imbalanced within the network as a whole. The power converter can include a network bridge that operates in accordance with the pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy having a switching frequency (Fpwm), a nominal switching frequency (Fpwm_nom) and a number of pulses per period (Pulse_Number).

  • Publication number: 20050221697
Abstract: A propeller is driven by an electric motor through a mechanical drive train. The output torque of the motor to the drive train is controlled by a controller with respect to a normal torque reference signal and an emergency torque reference signal. When a measured deceleration of the motor exceeds a threshold deceleration value, the normal torque reference signal is modified or replaced by the emergency torque reference signal and the controller signals the motor to reduce or reverse the torque applied to the mechanical drive train by the motor. In this way, the integrity of the propeller and drive train can be protected if the propeller strikes an underwater obstruction.

  • Publication number: 20050093292
Abstract: A pipe fitting includes a polymeric body molded into and fixedly connected to a metallic body, so that the metallic body extends around the polymeric body. The polymeric body extends around and is contiguous with a passageway of the pipe fitting, and at least partially defines a first opening of the passageway that is for being mated to a polymeric pipe. The metallic body extends around and is contiguous with the passageway, and at least partially defines a second opening of the passageway that is for being mated to a metallic pipe.
