Abstract: A welding apparatus and shield are provided for safely and effectively welding metal structures. The shield includes a translucent body having an oblique end surface which, in part, extends beyond the end of a gas nozzle of an arc welding apparatus. The operator may safely view the arc plasma generated between the nozzle and a workpiece through a relatively flat portion of the shield. The shield substantially covers the arc plasma while in use, protecting the operator as well as bystanders.
