    Abstract: A device and method for the infusion of medicinal fluid at a controlled flow rate to a wound site or the blood stream of a patient is disclosed. A pump delivers fluid under pressure from a fluid source through a continuous and substantially constant flow path and through a supplemental bolus dose flow path. A large volume bolus dose reservoir accumulates a large quantity of fluid from the bolus dose flow path and holds the fluid under pressure. A flow regulator controls the fill rate of the large volume bolus reservoir. The large volume supplemental bolus dose is released from the bolus reservoir upon patient activation of a valve. The release rate of the bolus dose is controlled by the decompression of an elastomeric sphere or spring chamber, by the pressure gradient at the valve and/or by optional flow control tubing.

    Abstract: A device for regulating the flow rate of a fluid includes a housing containing a plurality of flow conduits fluidly connecting an inlet and an outlet, each of the flow conduits comprising a flow control tube (310, 312, 314) and a resiliently compressive occlusion tube (316, 318, 320), wherein the flow control tubes are of substantially equal internal diameter. Each of the flow control tubes has a length associated with a different flow rate. A resilient flow-blocking element (212a, 212b, 212c) is operatively associated with each of the occlusion tubes and is movable into a flow-blocking compression against its associated occlusion tube. An actuation mechanism (206) in the housing is operable: (a) to selectively engage and move one or more of the flow-blocking elements into the flow-blocking compression against its associated occlusion tube, and (b) to selectively be disengaged from any of the flow-blocking elements.

A clamp rotates between closed and open positions respectively blocking and enabling pump outflow. A plunger above the pump has an end contacting a movable wall of the pump and is movable between raised and lowered positions. A button above the plunger moves between extended and depressed positions, and has a ledge that engages the clamp when the button is moved to the depressed position and moves the clamp to its open position. A compression spring is disposed between the plunger and the button. A spring catch engages a detent in the button when the button is moved to its depressed position and holds the button there until released by a catch release on the plunger that disengages the spring catch from the detent in the button when the plunger is moved to its lowered position.

    Abstract: An improved gas volume calibration method and apparatus for use in respiratory gas analyzers. A control unit monitors the flow of calibration gas through the analyzer by monitoring the electrical signals produced by a gas turbine and a breath switch. During calibration, a known volume of calibration gas is repeatedly delivered to the analyzer from a calibration syringe at each of a number of different flow rates. On the basis of the information received from the turbine and the breath switch, the control unit generates and stores a piecewise linear approximation of the nonlinear characteristic of the turbine. This stored turbine characteristic is then made available during subsequent measurements to eliminate those volume errors which are associated with variations in the rate at which the sample gas is delivered, thereby affording measurements of improved accuracy.
