Publication number: 20030235352Abstract: The reclosable container or bag (100) includes a zipper tape (18) with interlocking profiles (14, 16) of a zipper (12). First and second lines of perforation (28, 30) are formed parallel to and between the interlocking profiles (14, 16). Furthermore, the zipper tape (18) is looped so as to align the first and second lines of perforation (28, 30) with each other thereby forming a perforated cap structure (10). An additional layer of material (24) is formed to cover the first and second lines of perforation (28, 30) to maintain a hermetic seal prior to tearing of the first and second lines of perforation (28, 30). Typically, a notch (120, 122) is formed in at least one of the crush areas (116, 118) on the end of the zipper tape (18) to direct the user's tearing force to the lines of perforation (28, 30) thereby providing access to the zipper (12) and providing subsequent evidence of prior opening of reclosable container or bag (100).Type: ApplicationFiled: June 24, 2002Publication date: December 25, 2003Inventors: Eric P. Plourde, Stephen P. Schaller

Publication number: 20030215165Abstract: An easy-open closure arrangement for bags is described. The closure arrangement includes a base web having a pair of longitudinal edges with a pair of perforated tear lines running in the same direction as the longitudinal edges. The perforated tear lines are located substantially equidistant from the longitudinal edges. A frangible layer is attached to one side of the base web with the frangible layer being positioned over the perforated tear lines to obstruct the perforations on one side. A tear bead is attached to the frangible layer on the side of the frangible layer opposite from the base web at a position between the location of the perforated tear lines. Alternative closure arrangements and bags incorporating the closure arrangements are also described.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 20, 2002Publication date: November 20, 2003Inventors: Robert E. Hogan, Eric P. Plourde

Publication number: 20030194158Abstract: The plastic bags are provided with a web tape with a row of apertures which are cut parallel to each other, but perpendicular to the direction of travel of the row. The apertures are not colinear with one another. The apertures are sized to allow air to pass therethrough but not to allow selected solids to pass therethrough. These apertures are cut with a rotating wheel with teeth parallel to the axis of rotation and sized to provide the apertures of the desired size.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 12, 2003Publication date: October 16, 2003Inventors: Eric P. Publication number: 20030177738Abstract: A method of forming, filling and sealing a reclosable package 46. A thermoform film 14 is fed toward a forming station 18. A zipper length 20 having mated interlocking profiles 21 and 23 and a slider 28 is fed onto the thermoform film transverse to the feeding direction of the film and one of the profiles is sealed to the film. A pocket 18 is thermoformed in the film and product 32 is fed into the pocket. A cover sheet 34 is then fed over the thermoform film covering the pocket 18 and second profile 23. The cover sheet 34 is sealed to the thermoform film at seal lines 38 along the pocket, to the second profile and above the zipper to form a filled package and the bottom seal 44 for the next package.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 25, 2002Publication date: September 25, 2003Inventor: Eric P. Patent number: 6620087Abstract: A zipper segment for transverse direction application to a bag film web in which the profiles are of unequal lengths and joined together at their ends. As a result, the shorter profile is placed in tension. During bag formation the longer profile is initially attached to the bag film web and the shorter side is attached only by the engagement of the profile interlocking members and end seals. The shorter side, which is not directly attached to the web, nonetheless remains close to the web as a result of the tension imparted on the short side by the longer side.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2000Date of Patent: September 16, 2003Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Eric P. Publication number: 20030103687Abstract: A reclosable package has a first wall and a second wall opposite to the front wall. A first zipper profile including a first interlocking member is attached to the first wall and a second profile having a second interlocking member, engageable with the first interlocking member, is attached to the second wall. A slider is positioned on the profiles for movement along the profiles from side to side of the package. Package material is provided which must be removed or ruptured to permit operation of the slider or to provide access to the package contents. In either event, the steps needed to permit the initial access to the package contents leave clear evidence for a consumer that the package has been opened.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 6, 2003Publication date: June 5, 2003Inventors: John H. Schneider, Donald L. Crevier, Steven Ausnit, Michael McMahon, Lawrence Share, Eric P. Plourde, Robert E. Hogan

Publication number: 20030101552Abstract: A variable alignment zipper (10) having a rib and groove interlocking means. The male interlocking profile (16) has a plurality of male ribs (26, 30, 32), each formed with a double-barbed end section. The male interlocking profile (16) is interlockable with a female interlocking profile (20), where the female interlocking profile (20) includes grooves (64, 68) formed by a plurality of male ribs (44, 48, 52). By varying the interlocking relationship of the male ribs (26, 30, 32) of the male interlocking profile (16) with the grooves (64, 68) of the female interlocking profile (20), the variable alignment zipper can align in any one of four positions for closure.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 30, 2001Publication date: June 5, 2003Inventors: Eric P. Publication number: 20030094231Abstract: An apparatus, device and method for producing end seals on a continuous supply of fastener strip having first and second interlocked profiles before the fastener strip is attached to a supply of thermoplastic film used to make a reclosable bag. The fastener strip is advanced through a guide. A first section is identified and fused thereby providing a first end seal. A second end section is identified with the identification based on the first end seal. The second section is fused, thereby providing a second end seal with the result of a length of fastener strip including a pair of end seals. A device is provided to simultaneously fuse and cut the fastener strip at the exiting end of the fastener guide.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 21, 2001Publication date: May 22, 2003Inventor: Eric P. Patent number: 6428642Abstract: A vertical form fill and seal apparatus is used to manufacture reclosable containers. A plastic zipper segment is provided with a double seal flange configuration wherein two zippers are provided for adjacent reclosable containers, one reclosable container being upside down and the other being rightside up. The zipper segment is initially provided on the web with the first flange sealed to the web. A tube is formed so that lateral edges are folded over and sealed to the second flange. A cut is thereafter formed by the sealing bars to separate the two reclosable containers from each other.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2000Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: David J. Patent number: 5875611Abstract: A reclosable package includes two sheets of a first polymeric resin material facing one another and forming a package opening having an inside and an outside. A first zipper strip having a male zipper profile and a first flange area, and a second zipper strip having a female zipper profile and a second flange area, are extruded from a second polymeric resin material. The first flange area is sealed to the first sheet with a first seal on the outside of the package opening, and the second flange area is sealed to the second sheet with a second seal on the outside of the package opening. The first and second seals are offset from one another relative to the male and female zipper profiles, so that the first and second seals are not in a back-to-back relationship with respect to one another.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1998Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventor: Eric P.
