Patent number: 6101175Abstract: In a communication system (100) where a remote unit is given a time offset for a base station (102) and hands off to the base station (102) if the remote unit (113) can acquire the base station within a time window surrounding the time offset, a remote unit (113) utilizes the time offset of each base station (supplied by a serving base station (101) via a downlink communication signal (116) and searches for neighboring base stations within the time window surrounding its PN offset. The time window surrounding an individual base station's PN offset is allowed to vary depending upon whether the communication system (100) is time synchronized. In particular, a base station (101) supplies the remote unit (113) with an indication that the communication system (100) is operating in a synchronized or an unsynchronized mode, and the remote unit (113) varies the time window (search window) accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1997Date of Patent: August 8, 2000Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Eric R. Schorman, Michael D. Kotzin

Patent number: 5974057Abstract: Correction of a round-trip delay within a communication system (100) takes place by receiving an uplink communication signal (119) over uplink communication signal paths (130-132) and determining what ray was utilized by a remote unit (113) in time aligning the uplink communication signal (119). In particular, a base station (101) analyzes the uplink communication signal (119) and predicts the ray that the remote unit (113) utilized for time alignment. Once the base station (101) has determined the ray that the remote unit (113) utilized in time alignment, the base station (101) corrects any calculation of round-trip delay accordingly.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1997Date of Patent: October 26, 1999Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Walter J. Rozanski, Jr., Eric R. Schorman

Patent number: 5517675Abstract: Transmission of candidate-sector signalling channels are synchronized to facilitate mobile-assisted handoff (MAHO) measurements by a mobile (125). Transmitters in candidate sectors each transmit their signalling channel at distinct frequencies and at predetermined intervals. The transmission of each signalling channel by each candidate sector transmitter is synchronized to provide a known reference to the mobile (125). When instructed, the mobile (125) need only to perform MAHO measurements at the predetermined intervals in the order and at the frequency instructed.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 1995Date of Patent: May 14, 1996Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: James M. Patent number: 5157728Abstract: An electronic system and a method substantially eliminates any delays caused by buffering of a signal containing speech. The electronic system comprises a receiver for receiving signals, a buffer, coupled to the receiver, a buffer controller coupled to the buffer, and an audio section for presenting signals received to a listener. The method comprises the following steps. The receiver receives an input signal representing speech, and produces an output signal representing the input signal after a delay intentionally introduced in the system. The delay corresponds to the length of the buffer. The buffer stores the input signal in the buffer at an input rate, and produces the output signal at an output rate.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1990Date of Patent: October 20, 1992Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Eric R. Patent number: 5054078Abstract: A communication device (10) comprises an input for receiving a first audio signal (12) and an input (36) for receiving a second audio signal. The communication device (10) also includes a circular buffer (34) for storing the output digital audio signal (12) and for producing an output audio signal (20). The communication device (10) determines whether at least a portion of the output audio signal (20) is present in the second audio signal. If such a portion is present, the communication device (10) subtracts the portion of the output audio signal (20) from the second audio signal, to produce a third audio signal (26). A threshold detector, responsive to the third audio signal, produces a first control signal, when the level of the third audio signal increases to at least a first predetermined level, and a second control signal, when the level of the third audio signal decreases to a value lower than a second predetermined level, where the second predetermined level is lower than the first predetermined level.Type: GrantFiled: March 5, 1990Date of Patent: October 1, 1991Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Eric R. Schorman, Kevin M. Laird

Patent number: 4992783Abstract: All subscribers operating within a communication system initially generate and transmit a random password and their ID code to the operation (control) center of a communication system. Thereafter, in a first embodiment, subscribers are commanded to modify (in a predetermined manner) and re-transmit their password and ID code either periodically or upon requesting access to the communication system. The modified password is retained as the current (authorized) password by both the subscriber and the system. In a second embodiment, subscribers are commanded to generate and transmit a new random password and their ID code to the system, which maintains a history of each subscriber's current and previous passwords. According to the invention, some of the subscribers having an unauthorized (duplicated) ID code may be inactive (off) when the subscriber is commanded to modify or generate a password.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1988Date of Patent: February 12, 1991Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Kenneth J. Zdunek, Philip A. Bieri, Eric R. Schorman

Patent number: 4821310Abstract: A trunked radio subscriber requesting dispatch service transmits a request for a channel and immediately begins to speak without waiting to receive permission to access the channel. The subscriber radio locally records the information to be transmitted and, upon being assigned a channel, begins to reproduce and transmit the information. Recording and reproduction provides delay to span the time between request for and assignment to a channel and eliminates the need for the subscriber to wait to transmit or to quickly seize a channel assigned after an initial refusal. This enhances overall response time and increases time available for transmitting information signals. During interconnect calling, a trunked system alternately assigns inbound and outbound frequencies only as required for back-and-forth communication between simplex radio and duplex wireline subscribers. Voice buffering allows the parties to begin talking during the delay between request for and assignment of frequencies.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1987Date of Patent: April 11, 1989Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Charles N. Lynk, Jr., Eric R. Schorman

Patent number: 4754450Abstract: A time division multiplexed (TDM) communication system is disclosed, which apportions radio frequency communication channels into at least two time slots. Voice signals for transmission on this system are analyzed and vo-coded into a digital signal that is transmitted during one or more of the time slots. Received messages are recovered from at least one of these time slots and the voice message synthesized from the vo-coded signal. In this manner multiple voice messages may be transceived in a time division multiplexed manner on a single narrowband communication channel.Type: GrantFiled: March 25, 1986Date of Patent: June 28, 1988Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Charles N. Lynk, Jr., Eric R. Schorman, Donald L. Linder

Patent number: 4677656Abstract: A telephone interconnect system for a two-way radio communications system is disclosed. A telephone patch interconnect unit accepts dialed digits from a telephone line, encodes them into a data packet, and couples the data packet to a fixed transceiver for transmission to remote units. A remote unit with a digit sequence identification matching the received and decoded dialed digit activates an alert. A remote unit may generate and store digits corresponding to a desired telephone number. The digits are subsequently encoded into a data packet and transmitted to the telephone patch interconnect unit. The interconnect unit accepts, acknowledges and decodes the data packet and couples the resulting digits to the telephone line.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1984Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Motorola, Inc.Inventors: Timothy M. Burke, Thomas F. Shirley, Jr., Eric R. Schorman, Eric S. Goldsmith
