  • Patent number: 6134566
Abstract: A message viewing program displays a preview pane that is controlled to avoid previewing messages with disruptive message content. Before the body of a message is previewed in the preview pane, an identifier relating to the message is written to a nonvolatile storage location. After the message is previewed in the preview pane without causing a system disruption, the identifier is deleted. Before a message is previewed, the nonvolatile storage location is searched for the identifier relating to the message. If the identifier is found, the message is not previewed in the preview pane. Also, an icon is displayed indicating that the message may contain disruptive message content. Alternatively, the message viewing program writes an enable identifier to a nonvolatile storage location when it shuts down without encountering a system disruption. If the enable identifier is not present upon start up, messages are not previewed in the preview pane.

  • Patent number: 5760773
Abstract: A central processing unit (CPU) is coupled to a computer display for displaying graphic and other information. The CPU is further coupled to a pointer control device such as a pen, stylus or mouse that permits the user to selectively position a pointer and activate an action handle on the display associated with a data object. Activation of the action handle signals the CPU of selections associated with the data object. Tapping or clicking on the action handle causes display of a context menu containing at least one command that may be invoked with respect to the data object. Dragging the action handle indicates movement or dragging of the action handle and the corresponding data object for an operation associated with dragging such as drag-and-drop. The use of action handles in association with data objects eliminates ambiguity between actions intended to create digital ink with respect to a pen-based computer system and actions intended to invoke a command or other interaction with the computer system.

  • Patent number: 5710832
Abstract: A method and system for training a handwriting recognizer at the time of misrecognition is provided. In a preferred embodiment, a trainer program traps and stores the output from a recognizer. The output includes the recognized symbols mapped to the handwritten data. When training is requested by a user, the trainer displays the handwritten data that was input by the user and the recognized symbols. The user then selects the symbols to train on. In response to the selection, the trainer displays the portion of the handwritten data corresponding to the selected symbols. The user then enters the symbols that the displayed portion of the handwritten data should be recognized as. The trainer then requests the recognizer to train based on the displayed portion of the data and the entered symbols. When training is complete, the trainer requests re-recognition of the handwritten data and displays the newly recognized symbols.
