Patent number: 7218952Abstract: A method, system and apparatus in a wireless communications system selectively utilizes the Internet for the transmission of information. In a first embodiment, a subscriber can activate an Internet call forwarding (ICF) supplementary service (SS). From the subscriber's Mobile Station, an ICF message is transmitted to and stored in the subscriber's Home Location Register (HLR). The ICF message may optionally designate an Internet protocol (IP) address destination and may optionally activate other features pursuant to the data type received. For example, the ICF message may request that only fax/data calls or only calls that would otherwise incur a long distance charge be forwarded over/through the Internet. In operation, an incoming call to a Gateway Mobile Services Switching Center (GMSC) causes the GMSC to interrogate the called party's HLR. The information in the incoming call is then forwarded either over/through the Internet or over the PSTN based on the features activated by the ICF message.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1998Date of Patent: May 15, 2007Assignee: Ericsson Inc.Inventors: Vladimir Alperovich, Eric Valentine

Publication number: 20030165124Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for monitoring the activity within a local area network (LAN), and, if the LAN traffic levels are above a threshold level such that wireless speech quality drops below an acceptable level, a handover of mobile communications can be performed to either a non-LAN based umbrella cell, or to another cell associated with a different LAN. A monitoring application within an Access Node (AN) of the LAN monitors the LAN conditions through the LAN management system (LMS). Based upon the information obtained from LMS, the new monitoring application in the AN can request a handover to be performed from the LAN based network to either the non-LAN umbrella cell or to another cell associated with another LAN system. Thus, the speech quality of mobile communications can be maintained in periods of high LAN traffic, and the load on the LAN can be maintained without adding further congestion due to mobile communications.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 30, 1998Publication date: September 4, 2003Inventors: VLADIMIR ALPEROVICH, RANJIT BHATIA, ERIC VALENTINE
