  • Patent number: 7366157
Abstract: A system (100) and method for routing an emergency request message from an Internet user (50) to an emergency-call-answering center (31) consisting of Public Service Access Points (PSAPs). An emergency request message is transmitted to an IP network (60) which is received by an emergency call handling function (172). The emergency call handling function (172) queries a database (170) and returns the physical location information associated with the IP address of the user (50). The call is formatted into a format compatible with the emergency call answering center (31) and transmitted via the PSTN (20) to the PSAP (36) serving the correct emergency service zone for the user (50).

  • Patent number: 7218952
Abstract: A method, system and apparatus in a wireless communications system selectively utilizes the Internet for the transmission of information. In a first embodiment, a subscriber can activate an Internet call forwarding (ICF) supplementary service (SS). From the subscriber's Mobile Station, an ICF message is transmitted to and stored in the subscriber's Home Location Register (HLR). The ICF message may optionally designate an Internet protocol (IP) address destination and may optionally activate other features pursuant to the data type received. For example, the ICF message may request that only fax/data calls or only calls that would otherwise incur a long distance charge be forwarded over/through the Internet. In operation, an incoming call to a Gateway Mobile Services Switching Center (GMSC) causes the GMSC to interrogate the called party's HLR. The information in the incoming call is then forwarded either over/through the Internet or over the PSTN based on the features activated by the ICF message.

  • Patent number: 6735184
Abstract: A system and method for a terrestrial IP network for efficient transmissions within a satellite-terrestrial network. The terrestrial network of a satellite-terrestrial telecommunications system provides for IP signaling between satellite access nodes without the use of dedicated, circuit switched trunks therebetween. The terrestrial network configuration provides for mobile services switching center redundancy and load sharing, as well as direct packet routing between satellite access nodes. Alternatively, a signaling gateway may be interposed on dedicated satellite access node links for converting inter-satellite access node traffic into an IP signaling format for efficient utilization of the direct links.

  • Publication number: 20030165124
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for monitoring the activity within a local area network (LAN), and, if the LAN traffic levels are above a threshold level such that wireless speech quality drops below an acceptable level, a handover of mobile communications can be performed to either a non-LAN based umbrella cell, or to another cell associated with a different LAN. A monitoring application within an Access Node (AN) of the LAN monitors the LAN conditions through the LAN management system (LMS). Based upon the information obtained from LMS, the new monitoring application in the AN can request a handover to be performed from the LAN based network to either the non-LAN umbrella cell or to another cell associated with another LAN system. Thus, the speech quality of mobile communications can be maintained in periods of high LAN traffic, and the load on the LAN can be maintained without adding further congestion due to mobile communications.

  • Patent number: 6600740
Abstract: A communication network having multiple codecs communicating voice calls between an originating network and a terminating network. The communication network includes an originating codec and a terminating codec. The network provides signaling indicating the decoding algorithm to the originating network, and indicating the encoding algorithm to the terminating network. The original encoding algorithms and the original decoding algorithms are then altered from the standard as a function of this signaling to produce a best fit encoding matching to improve voice quality.

  • Patent number: 6577862
Abstract: Provided is a system, method, and computer program for transmitting, across a mobile communication network, the occurrence of silence in a communication channel. The system generally comprises a first Media Gateway (MGW), which could be a transmission control node (first TCN), for executing a silence transmission algorithm, and a second MGW, such as a second transmission control node (second TCN), for executing a comfort noise generating algorithm. One method detects silence in a communications channel and then transmits a network silence indicator (SID). Another method receives the network SID and then produces a comfort noise. The computer program utilizes a query module for detecting a comfort noise production module in a destination MGW, and a network SID transmission module to send a network SID across a PLMN.

  • Patent number: 6567668
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method for managing the eligibility of access to a satellite-based network by mobile originated and mobile terminated calls by including, for example, within the tables that the Terrestrial Network Manager (TNM) consults, information regarding areas with no allowed service area and areas with restricted service. After the location and the International Mobility Subscriber Identity (IMSI) of the calling and called party are determined, the tables are consulted and a determination is made regarding whether the calling or called party should be excluded from the satellite/beam selection. Advantageously, the systems and methods of the present invention are not dependent on accurate location information being stored in the MSC/VLR.

  • Patent number: 6510171
Abstract: A system and method for transmitting a signal from a telephone terminal to a central office. The telephone terminal and central office are connected to aggregation points. The aggregation points include wire hoppers which receive the signals from the telephone terminal and the central office, spread the signals over a plurality of communication channels and transmit the signals over a common multilink transmission medium. When the signals are received at the central office, they are accordingly reassembled.

  • Patent number: 6504839
Abstract: Apparatus, methods and systems for routing information from a packet-switched network to a mobile device communicating with a wireless telecommunications network, wherein a call request for a mobile device is received from the packet-switched network at a first node of the wireless telecommunications network; a determination is made of the serving node of the wireless telecommunications network in communication with the mobile device and whether the serving node is coupled to the packet-switched network; and the call request is redirected to the serving node in response to an affirmative indication that the serving node is coupled to the packet-switched network. Alternatively, in response to a negative indication that the serving node is coupled to the packet-switched network, the call request is routed from the first node to the serving node through a circuit-switched network coupled intermediate to the first node and the serving node.

  • Patent number: 6487209
Abstract: The present invention provides a system and method for reliably transferring Dual Tone Multiple Frequency (DTMF) signals originating at a MS through an IP based GSM network. In general, when a MS sends a DTMF request, it is processed in the IP network by a logical application module in a MSC, which, based on the disclosed processing, activates another logical application module in an appropriate gateway (for independent, remote, tone generation), and then the logical application module in the gateway directs the production of the DTMF signal towards the interworking or destination network.

  • Patent number: 6477366
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for creating “virtual Citizen's Band (CB) radio channel groups” within a cellular network. In a first embodiment, the virtual channel groups are built within the Mobile Switching Center (MSC). Each mobile subscriber participant is associated with the other mobile subscriber participants in the MSC, using a transaction identifier and conference bridges. Each group can be monitored, and each individual participants communication link can be controlled independently to facilitate individual disconnection. In a second embodiment, the virtual channel groups are built directly over the air. Participating mobile subscribers within range of each other can communicate directly with one another, using the same forward and reverse traffic channels.

  • Patent number: 6449478
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for providing a more accurate measurement of the cumulative path delay present in a call to enable switches to make an informed decision as to the routing method to use. In one embodiment, the Integrated Services Digital Network User Part (ISUP) satellite hop counter field is expanded to include three fields, one for each type of delay: geostationary satellite hops, mid-earth orbit satellite hops and low-earth orbit satellite hops. In an alternative embodiment, a cumulative delay value in milliseconds or centiseconds, instead of the number of satellite hops, can be included in the expanded ISUP satellite hop counter field.

  • Patent number: 6442394
Abstract: Apparatus, methods and systems relating to providing vehicular traffic information through a wireless telecommunications network. An exemplary system includes a geographic location system (GLS), a database containing vehicular roadway information, and a vehicular traffic determination node. The GLS is operative to determine the approximate physical location of at least one Mobile Station (MS) in communication with the wireless telecommunications network.
