  • Patent number: 5841831
Abstract: In an x-ray computed tomography apparatus the source of X-rays and the detector are able to scan a volume of the examination subject in a short time. The X-ray source contains an anode that is elongated in the z-direction, on which the focus travels by a controlled deflection of an electron beam. A primary beam diaphragm is displaced synchronously with the focus movement along the anode. The diaphragm forms a pyramid-shaped X-ray beam which always fully strikes the detector but does not overshot the detector. The detector is formed by a matrix of detector elements.

  • Patent number: 5822395
Abstract: An x-ray tube with vario-focus has an evacuated housing in which are arranged, rigidly connected thereto, an electron-emitting cathode and an anode dish which is struck by the electron beam, accelerated with an electrical field. An electromagnetic system for deflecting and focusing the electron beam is provided, and has a number of current-permeated coil elements. A lateral x-ray beam exit window is provided in the housing for the x-rays, which emerge at substantially a right angle relative to the longitudinal middle axis. At least the anode dish is tiltable relative to the connecting axis to the image receiver, and the electromagnetic system at least partially surrounds a cathode-side neck section of the housing, and generates a quadrupole field for modifying the electron beam cross-section, corresponding to the tilt angle.

  • Patent number: 5812632
Abstract: An x-ray tube has an evacuated housing in which an electron-emitting cathode is rigidly mounted and a rotating anode having an anode dish rotatable by a drive arrangement, which is struck by the electron beam, accelerated with an electrical field, for producing x-rays. An electromagnetic system for the deflection and focusing of the electron beam has a number of current-permeated coil elements. The cathode generates a rotationally-symmetrical circular beam, and the rotational axis of the anode dish is offset from and parallel to the axis of the electron beam by the average radius of the anode dish edge. The electromagnetic system generates a dipole-free quadrupole field that deforms the electron beam cross-section.

  • Patent number: 5745546
Abstract: An anode for an x-ray tube has an incident surface on which an electron beam is incident for generating x-rays emanating from a focal spot. In at least that region wherein the focal spot is located during operation of the x-ray tube, the incident surface has a step-like structure with end faces that reside at a substantially right angle relative to the electron beam during operation of the x-ray tube. The end faces are connected by respective sidewalls, and backscattered electrons from the end faces strike the sidewalls and generate x-rays in addition to x-rays emanating from the end faces struck by the electron beam, thereby improving the efficiency of x-ray generation. A similar improvement can be achieved by an anode having a roughened surface in the region of the focal spot.

  • Patent number: 5633906
Abstract: In an x-ray beam computed tomography apparatus having a ring anode scanned by an electron beam for producing an x-ray beam which rotates around an examination region, measurement of the intensity distribution in the electron beam is enabled at various locations of the ring anode during operation. For this purpose, the ring anode can have at a number of locations around its circumferential direction, insulated sub-anodes with an insulating interspace therebetween, to which a measuring arrangement for measuring the charge distribution, and thus the intensity distribution, in the electron beam is connected. The charge distribution is measured when the electron beam sweeps the interspace between two sub-anodes.

  • Patent number: 5528658
Abstract: An x-ray tube has an annular vacuum housing through which an electron beam passes in an annular path, an annular target from which x-radiation emanates during operation of the x-ray tube when the electron beam strikes it at a point of incidence, and a beam deflector which is movable along the circumference of the vacuum housing and which deflects the electron beam such that it is incident onto the target at a point of incidence that is dependent on the position of the deflector along the circumference of the vacuum housing. An x-ray beam emanating from the target is thus caused to move around the interior of the vacuum housing in the manner necessary for producing computed tomograms of a subject disposed in the interior of the vacuum housing.

  • Patent number: 5504791
Abstract: In an electronic x-ray computed tomography apparatus that enables a scanning of approximately 360.degree., the electron beam is guided in an annularly fashioned magnet arrangement that has a U-shaped cross section. The U enables the guidance of the electron beam to the annular anode and enables the emergence of the x-radiation. The magnet arrangement is composed of a number of side-by-side U-shaped magnet elements arranged to form an annulus with a coil for excitation of the magnet element respectively arranged on the cross bar of each U. A single magnetic arrangement is thus used to generate both the electron beam guidance field and, by means of a sudden polarity reversal of a magnet element disposed at a desired deflection location, the deflection field.
