    Abstract: Paint formulations containing barium salts of hydroxy acids such as citric, tartaric, salicyclic, alizarine, quinizarine, and chloranilic in their anhydrous or hydrated forms are useful as primer coats for inhibiting rust for time periods equivalent to or better than those primers containing oxides and salts of lead. Barium salt mixtures, coprecipitated blends and barium salt coated substrates are particularly useful as paint additives.

    Abstract: Isocyanurate polymers having improved physical properties are disclosed. Unsaturated isocyanates are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with a monohydric alcohol containing a vinylidene group to form an isocyanate-containing urethane and then reacting the isocyanate-containing urethane with tris(2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanurate to form an unsaturated isocyanurate. The unsaturated isocyanurate may be homopolymerized or copolymerized with ethylenically unsaturated compounds to form isocyanurate polymers having an excellent combination of physical properties.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the preparation of ethylenically unsaturated isocyanurates which comprises a first step of trimerizing an aromatic polyisocyanate in the presence of an isocyanate trimerization catalyst and an ethylenically unsaturated solvent wherein at least 20% by weight of the solvent is an ethylenically unsaturated polar solvent, to form an isocyanate-containing isocyanurate and a second step of reacting the isocyanate-containing isocyanurate with a monohydric alcohol containing a vinylidene group to form an ethylenically unsaturated isocyanurate. The resulting solution of an ethylenically unsaturated isocyanurate dissolved in an ethylenically unsaturated solvent may be cured to form resins having excellent high temperature resistant properties.

    Abstract: Ethylenically unsaturated monomer solutions are thickened to moldable gels by the formation of homogeneous urylene-linked linear saturated polyester/polyurethane resin mixtures. These are made by the addition of certain diamines to monomer solutions containing isocyanate terminated polyester/polyurethane resins. These gels exhibit improved laminar flow characteristics at moderate molding temperatures and pressures and retain these flow characteristics even when they contain as high as 80 percent concentrations of a filler such as 1-inch fiber glass filaments. The method comprises shaping the gel to obtain a shaped tractable article and then further shaping the shaped tractable article until the article becomes intractable. Shaping can be by casting in a mold or by compression molding.

    Abstract: Fully cured reinforced molded resins such as polyester, polyurea urethane, polyurea, polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, polyepoxy and polycarbonate resins can be in-mold coated to cover surface defects such as sink marks and microcracks with an improved coating composition comprising 5-94% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated base resin free of groups reactive with isocyanate radicals; 5-94% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer free of groups reactive with isocyanate radicals and 1-20% by weight of isocyanate containing compounds or compounds which decompose to form free isocyanate containing compounds. Such coatings unexpectedly have improved adherence to molded articles over similar compositions which contain no free isocyanate. Such coatings exhibit excellent adhesion and when subjected to the standard adhesion test ASTM D3359-74 are graded from 3-5 and when subjected to the GM"X" adhesion test are graded from 8 through 10.
