  • Patent number: 6940618
Abstract: A linefeed calibration method for identifying media advancement errors utilizes plural test patterns, including both a base pattern and an overlay pattern that are printed overlying each other to form an interference pattern. A sensor detects overall alignment of the interference pattern. That overall alignment is compared to alignment of at least a second interference pattern to identify a linefeed advance error. The error is correlated to a position on a media advancement mechanism such as a roller. A processor then adjusts the media advancement mechanism to correct the identified media advancement error. Under-advance errors, over-advance errors and skew errors may be identified using the described method.

  • Patent number: 6390703
Abstract: A system is provided for use in a printer, the system including a media width sensor which is configured to sense the presence of media at a predetermined transverse position within the media path. By sensing media at such predetermined transverse position, it is possible to determine media width, and thus to identify media type. Correspondingly, it is possible to adapt media handling to address particular characteristics of the media, namely, thickness of the media and width of the media sheets.

  • Patent number: 6315392
Abstract: A printer that includes a carriage, a first printhead mounted in the carriage, a second printhead printing black ink mounted in the carriage, and a third printhead mounted in the carriage, where the second printhead is between the first printhead and the third printhead. The printer further includes a print zone having left and right boundaries where text or another image is to be printed by black ink. The carriage scans such that the second printhead does not go beyond the left and right boundaries of the print zone. The leading one of the first or third printheads underprints the black ink. A trailing one of the first or third printheads overprints the black ink. Using this technique, the scanning distance is reduced by at least the width of two printheads, resulting in a 20% improvement in printing speed in one embodiment. Techniques for reducing hue shifts between adjacent print swaths are described.

  • Patent number: 5659341
Abstract: A wiper assembly for an ink-jet printer includes a sled subassembly movable between retracted and activated positions. A wiper is mounted on the sled subassembly to clean a nozzle section of the ink-jet print head when the sled subassembly is in an activated position. A movable rack supports and moves the sled subassembly between the retracted and activated positions. An adjustable position reference lever is operably mounted adjacent to the rack to establish a reference travel position for the sled subassembly between the retracted and activated positions. The position reference lever is capable upon adjustment of changing the reference travel position. In its preferred form, the position reference lever consists of a primary lever and a secondary lever movably connected to the primary lever. The secondary lever defines the reference travel position for the wiper assembly between the retracted and activated positions and is movable relative to the primary lever to change the reference travel position.
