  • Patent number: 4630602
Abstract: A disposable contraceptive cervical barrier includes a bowl-shaped thin flexible member and a substantially thicker circular rim unitary with the flexible member. The rim provides a spring tension effect for helping to maintain the barrier in position. A plurality of cavities are formed in the rim and are equidistantly spaced therearound. The cavities are open so as to be capable of receiving and holding a quantity of a spermicide. Alternatively, the flexible member itself can be provided with a plurality of grooves for holding the spermicide. Preferably, the barrier is made from a mixture of a hydrophilic foam polymer and a more conventional polyurethane polyether prepolymer-catalyst system. The mixture is molded in a closed mold having a volume of about ten percent of the volume which the material would occupy if allowed to foam freely. The finished product is similar to an elastomer except that internally it has a dense cellular structure and is bounded by an impermeable skin.

  • Patent number: 4311543
Abstract: Disposable contraceptive intravaginal cervical barriers of one, two, three, four, or five layers in the form of standard pessaries with at least one layer impervious to the passage of sperm, with a medicament such as spermicide, germicide, or an abortion inducing agent either impregnated into a foam plastic layer or in the form of a layer of gel or powder, said medicament being activatable upon contact with an aqueous solution. Methods of producing disposable contraceptive barriers either as a wet foam plastic method wherein medicament is added to liquid foam and the resulting mixture is formed in a mold with any subsequent layers then added, or as a dry foam plastic method wherein layers including a layer of medicament in the form of a gel or a powder are superposed in sequence and formed in a die.

  • Patent number: 4145918
Abstract: A freeze and thaw indicator is provided utilizing the expansion characteristics of water when it undergoes a change from the liquid state to the solid state. An ampul having one side made weaker than its opposite side is substantially filled with water. Indicator paper having ink printed on one side is situated adjacent to the ampul. The indicator paper and ampul are housed in a blister pack plastic container for protecting the ampul from breakage. When the temperature around the indicator reaches the freezing point of water, the ampul breaks. During a subsequent thawing, the water flows on to the indicator paper causing the ink which is printed on one side to wick up, thereby indicating that the freeze or thaw has taken place.

  • Patent number: 4136448
Abstract: A sealable edged aperture is produced in a can top by a generally triangular shaped cutting element which severs a flap-like portion from the can top. The cutting element also includes a wedging structure for folding a portion of the severed flap into abutting relationship with the underside of the can top to provide a discrete seal edge on the aperture. The cutting element is carried on a lever arm which is pivotally attached to a manually grippable element positioned adjacent the can sidewall. A bridging element is also provided at the pivot point to support the opener in the can.

  • Patent number: 4103804
Abstract: Closures having a generally triangular shape corresponding to tab opening cans include a seal plug with depending sealing lips and an internal cavity which facilitates installation and provides a sealing force. A resilient spring member may also be imbedded in the closure about the cavity to increase the sealing. The closures are resealable and may be reusable. A pouring or drinking spout and protective lip structure is also disclosed. The closures are opened by means of handles which define the cavity. The handles may include a structure for locking the handle on the rim of the can during dispensing. The closures are suited for use on a wide variety of can aperture sizes.
