Patent number: 10295501Abstract: A method for scanning a weld buildup formed on a circumferential portion of a disc for a steam turbine. The method includes providing an ultrasound probe for generating at least one ultrasound beam sweep. The circumferential portion is scanned with a first beam sweep oriented in a first beam orientation to detect a first flaw type in the weld buildup. The circumferential portion is also scanned with a second beam sweep oriented in a second beam orientation to detect a second flaw type in the weld buildup. Further, the circumferential portion is scanned with a third beam sweep oriented in a third beam orientation to detect a third flaw type in the weld buildup. The method also includes rotating the disc about a disc axis during scanning of the circumferential portion and moving the first, second and third beam sweeps in a direction parallel to the disc axis during scanning.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2014Date of Patent: May 21, 2019Assignee: SIEMENS ENERGY, INC.Inventors: El Mahjoub Rasselkorde, Michael F. Fair, David S. Segletes, Erik A. Lombardo, Scott M. Westby-Gibson, Waheed A. Abbasi

Patent number: 9349516Abstract: A magnetic particle inspection system for inspecting a plurality of articles. The system includes a first magnetizing coil for generating a first magnetic field oriented in a first direction. The system also includes a second magnetizing coil for generating a second magnetic field oriented in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, wherein the first and second magnetizing coils are located in a common plane. In addition, the system may include a mat having a plurality of drainage holes, wherein the first and second magnetizing coils are located in the mat and the first and second magnetizing coils are sized to inspect a plurality of articles. Further, the system includes a power supply for supplying power for energizing the first and second magnetizing coils and a switching unit for switching current flow between the first and second magnetizing coils.Type: GrantFiled: February 13, 2014Date of Patent: May 24, 2016Assignee: SIEMENS ENERGY, INC.Inventors: Erik A. Patent number: 9316619Abstract: A scanning probe for an industrial nondestructive evaluation (NDE) ultrasound or eddy current scanning system. The scanning probe gathers reflected waveform data indicative of internal characteristics of the test object. The scanning probe also includes a self-contained multi-axis position encoder that correlates both multi-dimensional probe underside translation and rotation motion across the test sample surface with the multi-dimensional spatial location on the test object surface. The position encoder compensates for probe rotation that would otherwise negatively impact probe position determination accuracy. A data acquisition system combines sets of positional and waveform data for processing by an NDE analyzer.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2013Date of Patent: April 19, 2016Assignee: Siemens Energy, Inc.Inventors: Erik A. Lombardo, David S. Segletes, Timor Abu-Jaber

Patent number: 8823369Abstract: A non-destructive inspection system that has particular application for inspecting a bore in a valve for defects. The system includes an inspection yoke having a ferromagnetic core, where a first coil is wound around the core in one direction and a second coil is wound around the core in an orthogonal direction so that orthogonal electromagnetic fields can be generated within the bore. A controller provides a current flow through the coils to generate the electromagnetic fields to detect defects in the bore.Type: GrantFiled: May 17, 2011Date of Patent: September 2, 2014Assignee: Siemens Energy, Inc.Inventors: David S. Segletes, Erik A. Lombardo

Patent number: 8630817Abstract: Disclosed is a bore measurement unit having an elongate main body with first and second ends. A first adjustment mechanism is disposed near the first end and a second adjustment mechanism is disposed near said second end. The adjustment mechanisms expand or contract, through triangulating arms, to relative diameters, such that when the unit is inserted into a hollow bore it may be centered therein. A measuring portion of the unit measures the internal diameter of the bore. The measuring unit includes at least one sensor and preferably takes more than three readings at each distance of insertion to formulate a best fit circle of the inner bore diameter.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2011Date of Patent: January 14, 2014Assignee: Siemens Energy, Inc.Inventors: Daniel Fraser, Erik A. Lombardo
