    Abstract: The present invention relates to a ceramic material consisting of ?-sialon (Si6-zAlzOzN), polytype 12H, an intergranular amorphous or partly crystalline phase, and containing yttrium with a z-value of from about 0.7 to less than about 1.5. The ceramic material is useful as cutting tool insert for machining of heat resistant super alloys, with good notch wear, acceptable flank wear and sufficient toughness.
