    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for gas metal arc welding are provided. The methods of the invention allow production of high quality welds using shielding gas atmospheres having at least 30% carbon dioxide and electrode diameters less than 1.6 mm. The metal transfer mode is not short-circuit transfer. The invention also provides welding torch contact tips having a localized contact region.
