  • Patent number: 4170663
Abstract: Hard, mar resistant and abrasion resistant coatings of low gloss are prepared by exposing a coating composition containing an oxygen inhibitable, radiation curable, organic material and an ultraviolet light absorbing pigment to radiation in three stages. In the first stage, the coating composition is exposed to ionizing radiation in an atmosphere containing a cure inhibiting amount of oxygen. In the second stage, it is exposed to ultraviolet light in an atmosphere free of a cure inhibiting amount of oxygen. In the third stage, the coating composition is exposed to ionizing radiation.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 13, 1978
Date of Patent: October 9, 1979
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Ernest A. Hahn, Gary F. Murphy, deceased, Gerald J. Bruckbauer
  • Patent number: 4113893
Abstract: Coating compositions containing the oxygen sensitive diacrylate monomers 3-acrylyloxy-2,2-dimethylpropyl 3-acrylyloxy-2,2-dimethylpropionate, 1,3-bis(acrylyloxy)-2,2-dimethylpropane or mixtures thereof and further containing hiding pigment are cured by ionizing irradiation in the presence of a curing atmosphere containing from about 300 to about 1000 parts oxygen per million parts curing atmosphere. The resulting cured coating compositions are useful as protective coatings for many substrates.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: September 12, 1978
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
    Inventor: Ernest A. Hahn
  • Patent number: 4064286
Abstract: This invention relates to radiation curable compositions having improved resistance to color bleaching, resistance to chalking and/or improved gloss retention. The compositions comprise ethylenically unsaturated diacrylate or an unsaturated polyester in admixture with a polymerized aminoalkyl alkoxysilane.

  • Patent number: 3950592
Abstract: A composition comprising a vinyl resin and a mixture of acrylic compounds each having the formula: ##SPC1##Wherein n is from 0 to 10, or a mixture of acrylic compounds each having the formula: ##SPC2##Wherein n is from 0 to 10, may be coated on to a metal substrate and subjected to ionizing irradiation and used as a primer coating for numerous radiation-sensitive topcoats.

Date of Patent: April 13, 1976
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Ernest A. Hahn, Robert J. Sirkoch
  • Patent number: 3936411
Abstract: Coating compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride are prepared by mixing a solution of polyvinyl chloride in an active solvent with an acrylic mixture and subjecting the mixture to ionizing irradiation. The cured films are hard, stain-resistant, heat-resistant, and mar-resistant.
