  • Patent number: 4463633
Abstract: A portable tool for selectively boring and refinishing one or more seating surfaces (30, 32) of end-loading ball valves. A cutter head assembly 146 bearing a tool bit 190 is translatable in an axial direction through the threaded cooperation of axial adjustment means 72 and the interior surface of a tool housing 68. The bit 190 is radially displacable when desired by the engagement of a radial feed mechanism, the engagement being effected by a bar member 122 selectively movable in a direction parallel to the axis of the tool. A cap 125 cooperates with an essentially flat chord-like portion 120 of the exterior of housing 68 to provide a channel through which the bar member 122 extends. The bit 190 includes the lowermost extremity of the cutter head assembly 146 and, in at least some positions of the bit 190, the greatest radial extremity of the cutter head assembly.

  • Patent number: 4378661
Abstract: A wedge-shaped gate valve element (12) is held by a portable apparatus (10) in proximity to a tool (14) for refinishing sloped surfaces (16) of the element (12). The element (12) is gripped by a vise (92) which, in turn, is rigidly mounted to a vise support (86). The vise support (86) is mounted on a frame (17) of the apparatus. A support surface (90) of the vise support (86) is suitably inclined to give an upper sloped surface (16a) of element (12) a desired orientation with respect to the refinishing tool (14) which is also held in position on the apparatus (10).

  • Patent number: 4205495
Abstract: The working elements of a gate valve are removed and a tool adapter is mounted on the valve body. The tool assembly is mounted on the adapter and includes an abrasive element mounted by a swivel joint which is rotatably driven. A first shaft is mounted in a housing element and is driven by an external power source. A pulley is mounted on the first shaft and, by a toothed belt, drives a second pulley. The second pulley rotates the swivel joint. The housing element extends through openings in the adapter and a base plate, the base plate being mounted on the adapter. The housing element is adjustable vertically relative to the base plate and is mounted for pivoting movement relative thereto to permit movement of the abrasive element into contact with a valve seating surface. The adapter has a configuration which mates with a portion of the valve body. The tool assembly includes a base plate which also mates with the adapter.

  • Patent number: 4114483
Abstract: A portable boring tool for refinishing the seal ring seats on ball valves is provided with a base plate which is mounted on top of the valve. A housing is supported by the base plate in a manner that permits linear movement of the housing. The housing contains gearing for transmitting motion from an input shaft above the base plate to a cutter assembly drive shaft below the base plate. The cutter assembly drive shaft rotates an automatically indexing cutter head assembly to cut successively smaller circles of material from the surface being refinished. A handwheel and feed screw arrangement is provided for moving the housing and cutter head assembly along a linear path. A micrometer is provided for limiting the depth of cut to be taken into the surface being refinished.

  • Patent number: 4090805
Abstract: A portable cutting tool is mounted on the top of a governor chest after the chest cover and valving mechanisms have been removed from the chest. The cutting tool rotates and axially advances a cutting head to cut away the weld material which welds a nozzle to a wall of the governor chest. This permits removal and replacement of the nozzle. The cutting tool is mounted on a mounting plate so as to permit selection of one of several locations as the cutting site, thus permitting use of a single cutting tool to effect the removal of all the nozzles within a governor chest. The cutting head carries two tool bits which cut in annular overlapping paths and the cutting head is recessed so it may pass over a nozzle as a weld is cut. A second cutter head is provided for refinishing the nozzle seats after the nozzles have been removed. Different interchangeable mounting plates permit the cutting tool to be utilized on governor chests of different sizes or having different spacings between nozzles.

  • Patent number: 4011793
Abstract: A small compact and light-weight tool is provided which is capable of boring and honing in-situ the seal ring seats of different sizes of high pressure valves. The tool housing support is threaded so that after removal of the valve stem and bonnet the tool may be screwed into the valve body. The support housing is internally threaded throughout its entire length for receiving and mating with an externally threaded feed screw. The feed screw is essentially a hollow cylinder having bearings therein for rotatably supporting a drive shaft. The drive shaft is adapted at one end to be driven and is adapted at the other end to receive the cutting tool holder, the cutting tool holder extending into the valve when the tool is mounted thereon. An internally threaded positive stop ring engages the feed screw and the setting of the stop ring determines the maximum depth of boring.
