  • Patent number: 7753509
Abstract: An ink stick for a phase change ink jet printer is provided. The ink stick includes a first ink stick body segment having a proximal portion and a distal portion, a second ink stick body segment having a proximal portion and a distal portion, and one or more flexible strand portions. The strand portion is formed integrally with the first ink stick body segment and the second ink stick body segment, and connects the proximal portion of the first ink stick body segment and the proximal portion of the second ink stick body segment. The strand portion flexes to permit variation in the distance between the distal portion of the first ink stick body segment and the distal portion of the second ink stick body segment.

  • Patent number: 7438402
Abstract: An ink stick for use in a phase change ink jet printer is provided wherein the ink jet printer has an ink feed channel having a feed direction leading to a melt plate. The ink stick comprises an ink stick body having an external surface and an axis of rotation. The ink stick body is adapted for insertion into the ink feed channel so that the axis of rotation is oriented substantially perpendicular to the feed direction. The external surface of the ink stick body forms a circle on a plane that is substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

  • Patent number: 7140716
Abstract: A locking mechanism in an image processing device is needed to lock a movable element of the image processing device. In embodiments, the locking mechanism has a support member disposed between the driving element and the movable element, the support member being movable between a first position and a second position, a pivot on the support member about which the support member is able to rotate, and a first rotating member on the support member, the first rotating member rotating when the movable element is moved by the driving element, and the locking mechanism is locked when both the first rotating member is stopped from rotating and the support member is rotated from the first position to the second position about the pivot.

  • Patent number: 7048369
Abstract: A drum maintenance unit (drum maintenance unit) to reduce build up of electrostatic charge within a printer device. The drum maintenance unit may have a static shield positioned to reduce the build up of an electrostatic charge and to act as a physical barrier by preventing discarded oil from becoming airborne and returning to the oiling roller unfiltered. The static shield may also be utilized to retain and house the filtration system of the drum maintenance unit thus reducing part count and manufacturing time.

  • Patent number: 6164752
Abstract: A method for purging an ink jet print head to clear ink jet orifices is provided. A purge cap forms a vacuum seal over the orifice plate of the print head. Multiple low pressure differential vacuum pulses are applied to the purge cap to remove debris and trapped air bubbles from the ink jet orifices. The low pressure pulses avoid cavitation inside the print head and reduce the amount of ink expelled during the purging process.

  • Patent number: 5949462
Abstract: A computer printer having a frame contained within a housing, a media transport and printing mechanism attached to the frame within the housing is provided with at least one debris shield positioned above the printing mechanism to protect it from falling debris. The at least one debris shield may be positioned below an air flow path generated by printer ventilation, and the printer may employ a transfer surface on which an image is generated prior to transfer to a media sheet, and above which the debris shield is positioned.

The at least one debris shield may be positioned below an air flow path generated by printer ventilation, and the printer may employ a transfer surface on which an image is generated prior to transfer to a media sheet, and above which the debris shield is positioned. Stripper fingers strip the media sheet from the transfer surface and webs between the stripper fingers form an air flow barrier to prevent debris transmission through gaps between the fingers.

  • Patent number: 5570117
Abstract: A method and an apparatus (10) for cleaning an ink jet print head (12) draws contaminates from orifices (20) in the print head onto an orifice plate (14) and then wipes the orifice plate. The maintenance apparatus includes a purge cap (24) that has a recessed region (40) with an open end (36). The top side margins (42) of the open end define a periphery (44) around which a seal (60) is positioned. A positioning system (30) urges the orifice plate against the seal. A heating system (128) and a vacuum system (74) cooperate to create a differential pressure across the orifices to draw contaminates carried by liquid ink out of them and onto the orifice plate. A resilient wiper assembly (26) including a spring-mounted wiper blade (78) is positioned in and nominally extends outwardly of the recessed region of the purge cap. The positioning system moves the purge cap downwardly against the orifice plate so that the wiper blade engages and wipes the contamination from the orifice plate.
