  • Patent number: 4114411
Abstract: An augmented key and cylinder lock has a housing with a bore therein concentric about an axis. A plug in the bore is rotatable about the axis and has a flange on one end. There is a radial pin tumbler mechanism in the plug and housing access to which is afforded by a keyway in the plug which extends through the flange leaving a notch therein. A key serrated along one edge to operate the pin tumbler mechanism is receivable in the keyway to occupy an operating position. In that position, a shoulder adjacent the serrated edge of the key substantially abuts the end face of the flange. In that position another, axially elongated shoulder on the key adjacent its other edge axially displaces a spring pressed detent, supported on the housing, out of the notch. This frees the plug from rotational restraint by the detent.

  • Patent number: 4107966
Abstract: A selectively rotatable cylinder for a lock has a cylinder housing with a bore extending along an axis. A cylinder plug having a keyway therein is rotatable in the bore about the axis. The plug is connected to a driving means for actuating any connected lock mechanism. In the cylinder body and cylinder plug are pin tumblers adapted to be positioned by a key in the keyway. An upper tumbler pin in the cylinder body is spring-pressed toward the keyway. A portion of the cylinder plug in the transverse plane of the upper tumbler pin is cut away to provide a substantially chordal cam surface or ramp extending from the periphery of the plug to a radially inward intersection with the keyway. The upper tumbler pin follows the ramp and moves toward the axis as the plug is turned by a key in the keyway. The side of the key encounters the lowered upper tumbler pin after a predetermined amount of rotation about the axis, thus preventing further rotation of the cylinder plug.

  • Patent number: 4065162
Abstract: A lock strike construction is for use with a wall having at least a cripple in the framing thereof and adjacent to a door casing side rail separated from the cripple by an intervening space. A door panel cooperates with the casing and has a lock with a bolt engageable with a strike on the door casing in a deeply recessed mortise. A planar elongated plate, symmetrical about a vertical axis, is in the mortise. An elongated bolt opening and a pair of screw clearance holes go through the planar plate on the axis. Also in the planar plate is a pair of screw rod holes, both disposed on one side of the axis. These receive a pair of screw rods extending through the intervening space and into the cripple as cantilever beams. The usual strike plate overlies the planar plate, its bolt opening registering with the bolt opening in the plate and its screw openings substantially registering with the screw clearance holes.

  • Patent number: 4028917
Abstract: A key retaining cylinder lock device has a cylinder body with a bore therein extending along an axis. A plug is rotatable in said bore about the axis and is confined against axial translation. The plug has an axially extending keyway therein open to said bore and adapted to receive a key having an edge notch partly defined by an inner wall extending at least partially transversely of said axis. The plug also has a circumferential groove open to the keyway and open to a chamber in part defined by a plug chordal surface lying on both sides of the keyway and substantially perpendicular to the plane of symmetry of the keyway. In the groove and chamber is a partial ring having a central, inwardly directed lug adapted to contact the plug chordal surface with rotary lost motion therebetween.

  • Patent number: 3967846
Abstract: A door lock has a frame in which a knob spindle is mounted for rotation about an axis. The spindle can be prevented from rotation on the frame by a bar movable along the axis into and out of a position in which the bar engages both the frame and a slot in the spindle. The bar is moved by a spring and by a manual button mounted in an inside knob on the frame. The spindle can also be prevented from rotation on the frame by a pin radially movable on the frame into and out of a position in which the pin engages both the frame and the spindle slot. The pin is moved by a spring and by an arcuate electromagnet disposed coaxially of the spindle and having a polepiece in position to influence an armature on the pin. The customary key-operated lock is installed in an outer knob fastened onto the spindle.

  • Patent number: 3951442
Abstract: A pivoting latch and lock for a door hinged in a frame having a strike aperture has a detent latch that can be moved out of the strike opening merely by pulling the door open unless the detent latch is specially blocked against such movement. In one embodiment a frame is installed on the door and presents an edge opening. Normally spring-projected partly through the edge opening is a detent latch having a central body carrying one or more pivot lugs guiding rotation of the detent latch about one or more axes located within the frame and alongside the detent latch. The detent latch has a surface associated with each axis so shaped as to clear the frame opening when the latch is rotated about that axis. A lever is pivoted on the frame to move into and out of a position blocking rotation of the detent latch. The lever may be operated by a solenoid or electromagnet. If desired, the same electrical device can move the two levers of duplicate pivoting latches.
