  • Patent number: 4291657
Abstract: A speed governor for a diesel engine having a fuel pump mechanically driven by the engine. The governor comprises a hydraulically activated valve. A first fuel line connects the valve to the fuel pump and a second fuel line connects the valve to the fuel injectors. The valve is activated by increasing fuel pressure to decrease the flow of fuel through the fuel lines and is activated by decreasing fuel pressure to increase the flow of fuel through the lines.

  • Patent number: 4290585
Abstract: A barrier for highway traffic of the type designed to bring a vehicle to standstill and avoid contact with a roadside hazard, e.g. a post, abutment or pylon, comprises an array of upstanding posts adapted to cushion the impact and increasing in number and height in the direction of travel of the vehicle toward the barrier to impose increasing resistance to traveling. The posts each comprise an upper and a lower section or portion in the form of tubes of which the lower tube is set into the ground while the upper tube is composed of thin sheet metal lined with or filled by a cushioning material such as a foamed synthetic resin. The two tubes or sections of each post are interconnected by a cast iron link which is designed to shear at ground level in part dissipating the kinetic energy of the vehicle. The upper tubes of the array are interconnected by chains.

  • Patent number: 4291390
Abstract: A solid state device capable of providing long-term storage of analog signals which in a particular embodiment utilizes a plurality of MNOS storage elements. An input analog signal is applied to a plurality of temporary storage means each associated with an MNOS storage element for temporarily storing a charge proportional to the amplitude of the portion of the input analog signal applied thereto. Storage control means are used to transfer the temporarily stored charges to the long-term MNOS storage elements so that controlled amounts of carrier charges are stored in the nitride layers thereof, such controlled amounts being substantially linearly proportional to the temporarily stored charges associated therewith. In a particular embodiment the input analog signal may be supplied via a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device and coupled to the MNOS device directly or it may be coupled to a charge-coupled device (CCD) and thence coupled to the MNOS device.

  • Patent number: 4290118
Abstract: A solid state device combining the use of a surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) device and a charge-coupled device (CCD) which utilizes an interface means therebetween comprising a plurality of conductive fingers responsive to an acoustic wave on the SAW device. The conductive fingers are electrically connected at at least one end to the CCD substrate and a plurality of temporary storage means are used for temporarily storing a charge proportional to the voltage potential on the associated conductive finger. The temporary stored charges can be transferred to the storage wells of the CCD for storing a replica of the acoustic wave. The SAW-CCD combination is adapted for use as a buffer memory, an accumulating correlator, or as a matched filter device.

  • Patent number: 4289542
Abstract: A contaminated article is subjected to vapor degreasing operations wherein the vapor degreasing solvent comprises a blend consisting essentially of perchlorethylene and trichlorethylene, wherein in the preferred embodiment, the perchlorethylene comprises about 81 volume percent of the degreasing solvent, while the trichlorethylene comprises the remaining 19 volume percent of the solvent blend. The solvent blend extends the normal life of perchlorethylene degreasing solvents alone, or in combination with stabilizers and the like, or, alternatively, allows the utilization of trichlorethylene at temperatures higher than those that would normally cause pyrolysis. The degreasing solvent blend not only extends the operational life of perchlorethylene-based vapor degreasing solvents, but also reduces the cost of conducting vapor degreasing operations.

  • Patent number: 4289458
Abstract: A foot pump comprises a base member and an operating member pivotally connected to the base member. A piston-and-cylinder assembly is connected between the members. In use the user depresses the operating member with his or her foot, thereby causing air to be compressed in and expelled from said assembly. A return spring returns the operating member to its raised position. The base and operating members have complementary pivot pin and hook means which are hooked together to form the pivotal connection between the members. The members are preferably made as unitary plastics mouldings, the pivot pin and hook means being resiliently clipped together.

  • Patent number: 4285183
Abstract: A wallboard patching apparatus which takes the form of a thin sheet material, bendable base, the base including hiatus means in the form of a plurality of spaced-apart perforations. Centrally attached to the base and extending substantially perpendicular therefrom is a lock pin. The free end of the lock pin includes a hook. Adhesive is to be applied to the front operating face of the base adjacent the periphery thereof. The base is to be deformed and inserted through an opening in the wallboard. Once the base is extended through the wallboard, the lock pin is grasped and the now planar base is moved against the wallboard with the adhesive compressed between the front operating face and the inner surface of the wallboard. A wire bridge member is located between the hook of the lock pin and the exterior surface of the wallboard to fix the position of the base.

  • Patent number: 4284951
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating the level of the electrolyte in a battery cell. A three-electrode sensor probe having the electrodes partially embedded in an electrically insulating housing suspended in the electrolyte so that a portion of the probe is immersed in the electrolyte. The electrolyte provides the only conduction path between the electrodes so that the resistance between the electrodes varies according to the level of the electrolyte. An AC or pulsed DC sensing signal is applied between two of the electrodes and an output signal related to the level of the electrolyte is produced. A polarizing current is applied to the other electrode to prevent the buildup of surface contamination on the two sensing electrodes due to the sensing signal.

  • Patent number: 4283207
Abstract: A diesel engine exhaust particulate filter-incinerator comprising an enclosed filter panel having particulate deposition surfaces bordered by electrodes of a high voltage power supply. Periodic incineration is accomplished by the collection on the surfaces of particulates in amounts sufficient to conduct sufficient electric current along paths through the particulates to heat them to incineration temperature. Ignition and burn off of particulates may be automatically accomplished by maintaining a suitable voltage across the electrodes at the edges of the collection surfaces to initiate arc-like current flow before the collected particulates reach a level that would plug the filter. Specific embodiments of exemplary filter constructions are disclosed.
