Patent number: 7173953Abstract: The present invention concerns an anti-reflection coating for semiconductor lasers, in particular a coating on the laser facet with advantageous properties resulting in improved reliability and reduced probability of specific breakdowns, especially so-called catastrophic optical damages (CODs). It is a quarter-wave coating with a predetermined reflectivity, preferably between 0 and 10% and consists of or comprises SiNx:H. It is preferably applied by a Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PE-CVD) process whose process parameters are controlled such that a desired optical thickness and refractive index of the coating are achieved. The PE-CVD process may be controlled to result in an Si/N ratio between about 0.5 and 1.5 and/or to produce a coating of essentially amorphous SiNx:H whose density approaches the density of crystalline Si3N4.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2003Date of Patent: February 6, 2007Assignee: Bookham Technology plcInventors: Andreas Wittmann, Martin Gotza, Michael Solar, Ernst-Eberhard Latta, Tim Kellner, Martin Krejci

Patent number: 6186184Abstract: A heald loom comprises a weaving machine (1) and a dobby (2) which can be coupled to one another via a mechanical transmission apparatus (3) and have a common drive train in the coupled state which can be driven by a main drive (5) It further comprises an auxiliary drive (6) which is arranged to act at least on the part of the drive train driving the dobby. The heald loom further comprises at least one sensor (7, 8) which measures the torque actually present at the drive train and which is arranged along the drive train in the region between the weaving machine (1) and the dobby (2) or in the end region of the weaving machine (1) or the dobby (2) respectively bordering on this region. This sensor (7, 8) is connected to a control system (9) which actuates the auxiliary drive (6) in such a manner that the torque and/or fluctuations in the speed of rotation present between the weaving machine (1) and the dobby (2) are reduced.Type: GrantFiled: April 13, 1998Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Assignee: Sulzer Rueti AGInventor: Ernst Eberhard

Patent number: 6065503Abstract: An apparatus for changing the beat-up positions of a reed in a weaving machine. The apparatus includes a drive, a drive member, a transmission and a kinematic chain. The kinematic chain is connected to the transmission and the pivot axle for the reed, with the pivot axle being pivotally mounted on the sley sword. A basic movement is imparted by the drive to the apparatus with the beat-up position of the pivot axle of the reed being changed by the drive member.Type: GrantFiled: May 27, 1998Date of Patent: May 23, 2000Assignee: Sulzer Rueti AGInventors: Klaus Berktold, Ernst Eberhard

Patent number: 5940424Abstract: A semiconductor laser diode, and a method for producing the semiconductor laser diode, includes a waveguide being terminated by a back facet and a front facet and a front facet coating and a back facet coating having a reflectivity providing for controlled decoupling of light at the front facet from the standing lightwave in the waveguide. The front facet coating includes a stack of layers providing for a phase shift of the standing lightwave within the waveguide such that the intensity of the lightwave at the front facet, where the light is decoupled from the standing lightwave, has a relative minimum.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1996Date of Patent: August 17, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Hans Peter Dietrich, Marcel Gasser, Abram Jakubowicz, Ernst-Eberhard Latta, Peter Roentgen

Patent number: 5755267Abstract: A Jacquard weaving machine includes a weaving apparatus and a Jacquard apparatus, which are both connected to one another for the transmission of torque via a mechanical transmission device and are driven by a common motor. An additional drive device is provided which acts at least on the Jacquard apparatus. An angle sensor is provided for the measurement of an angle of rotation and/or a torque sensor is provided for the measurement of the torque present between the weaving machine and the Jacquard apparatus. The sensors are connected to a control device that controls the drive device in such a manner that peak values in the torque and/or fluctuations in the speed of rotation are reduced.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1997Date of Patent: May 26, 1998Assignee: Sulzer Rueti AGInventors: Ernst Eberhard, Klaus Berktold

Patent number: 5632308Abstract: Weft yarn is inserted into the weaving rotor of a series shed weaving machine. Four weft yarns (7; 71, 72, 73, 74) are conveyed into the weft yarn distribution apparatus (9) from four supply units (2a-2d) and four metering apparatuses (1a-1d). The weft yarn distribution apparatus (9) distributes the weft yarns (71-74) delivered to it to the sheds of the weaving rotor (100) which are currently open, with the weft yarns being inserted through stationary fluid nozzles (91, 92, 93, 94) into the rotating weaving rotor (100). During normal operation of the series shed weaving machine, the weft yarn (71-74) is continuously pulled from the weft yarn supply (2a-2d) by the metering apparatuses (1a-1d) and conveyed to the weft yarn distribution apparatus (9) which conducts the weft yarn (71-74) into an opened shed (103a-103d). The speed of conveyance of the weft yarn (71-74) during insertion into the shed (103a-103d) is thus determined by the metering apparatus (1a-1d).Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1995Date of Patent: May 27, 1997Assignee: Sulzer Rueti AGInventors: Robert Bucher, Ernst Eberhard

Patent number: 5341851Abstract: A loom with two or more sectional warp beam, each associated with a measuring device for detecting the length of at least one of the warp threads, which runs off the sectional beam in question during a given advance of warp thread. Each measuring device has a measuring roller which is urged against a number of warp threads, e.g., against the circumference of the wound sectional warp beam and which is driven by them during the advance of warp thread, so that it is able to transmit a corresponding control signal to a control equipment. The control equipment regulates the r.p.m. of the sectional warp beams in dependence upon these control signals in the sense of keeping constant the predetermined length of any given warp thread advance. The invention is particularly useful for weaving off sectional warp beams having different winding diameters for assuring a homogeneous appearance of the weave across its entire width.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 1993Date of Patent: August 30, 1994Assignee: Sulzer Reuti AGInventors: Klaus Berktold, Ernst Eberhard

Patent number: 4526629Abstract: One or more monolayers of cerium arrayed on the surface of a niobium metal acts as a catalyst to oxidation of the niobium at ambient temperature and results in a very thin, very high quality insulating layer which may be configured by patterning of the catalyst. Significant amounts of Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 are formed at pressures as low as 6.6.times.10.sup.-6 Pa, promoted by the presence of the cerium. This catalytic activity is related to the trivalent to tetravalent valence change of the cerium during oxidation. The kinetics of Nb.sub.2 O.sub.5 formation beneath the oxidized cerium shows two stages:the first stage is fast growth limited by ion diffusion;the second stage is slow growth limited by electron tunneling.Other catalytic rare earths usable instead of cerium are terbium and praseodymium; other substrate materials usable instead of niobium are aluminum, hafnium, silicon and tantalum, or oxidizable alloys thereof.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1984Date of Patent: July 2, 1985Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Ernst-Eberhard Latta, Maria Ronay
